The confirmation this week that AB de Villiers will remain retired and not represent South Africa at this year's T20 World Cup will sting if you are a Proteas supporter. 

How could it not? 

The Proteas have lost all of their last five T20 series and, in their present shape, look nowhere near being an outfit that can challenge for top honours and a first-ever World Cup crown.
