In some ways, perhaps Tabraiz Shamsi best sums up the selection predicament now facing the Proteas after the remorselessly fast turnaround from their Twenty20 series humbling to the imminent ODIs against England.

The left-arm mystery spinner earned rightful plaudits when he played a pivotal role in so nearly ensuring a series-levelling victory in the second T20 clash at Boland Park on Sunday.

"Great energy and a sense of optimism," was the approving, on-the-mark verdict of visiting commentator and former Hampshire and England A captain Mark Nicholas as Shamsi, who plies a difficult trade, did his utmost to prevent what ended up being a tense visiting triumph with a single delivery to spare.
