Good luck deciding with any conviction who you believe will win the looming two-Test series between Pakistan and their South African guests.

Apart from the fact that the series, beginning in Karachi on 26 January, pits two essentially mid- to lower-table global powers against each other (the Proteas fifth on the current ICC rankings, Pakistan seventh) the host nation’s long-time reputation for severe unpredictability continues to stalk them.

Partly for that very reason, they tend to make for fascinating viewing, a great many of their Test matches including fits of pure genius and contrasting bouts of jaw-dropping ineptitude - particularly when it comes to fielding, an old bugbear.
