Cricket's long-time loyal servant, Shukri Conrad, finally ascended to the role likely most coveted in his career after being named the Proteas Test head coach on Monday.

Conrad is a figure who has commanded respect and reverence in South African cricket circles for decades.

Adam Bacher, the former Proteas opener, who played under Conrad at both Gauteng and Western Province, said he was surprised it took Cricket South Africa (CSA) this long to appoint him.
