South Africa are already at a painful nadir, certainly in a post-isolation context, when it comes to Test cricket.

Ranked a lowly seventh - one berth below their just-confirmed next opponents soon, West Indies in their Caribbean backyard - the Proteas have lost an unprecedented four of their last five series.

No less disturbing, however, is the way an outfit who prided themselves not too many years ago on their steely resolve in enemy territory, have suddenly become frail almost beyond belief outside of the country.
