Cape Town - Former fast bowler Makhaya Ntini has criticised the Proteas on a poor display in the one-day series in Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankans have an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series heading into Wednesday's final game in Colombo.

In an interview with the TimesLIVE website, Ntini said a consolation win on Wednesday would not make up for the efforts earlier in the series.

"A 3-2 result does not matter; the series is over," said Ntini.

"The shot selection has been very poor. Besides (Hashim) Amla in the last game (when Amla scored 77), they are not trying to build an innings. The attitude seems to be, 'If I get out, so what?'."

Ntini was also astounded that South Africa had sent down 58 wides in four matches. "That's ridiculous. Besides the extra runs that's almost 10 overs that they shouldn't have had to bowl."

Wednesday's match starts from 11:00 (SA time).

Following the ODI series, a three-match T20 series awaits, starting in Colombo on Friday.
