Cape Town - Due to the nature of the Open Championship being played on a rotational basis across various courses, seldom do players have the opportunity of defending the championship at a course where they’ve once won.

In the 141-year history of the major, only 12 players, Jamie Anderson (1880), Bob Ferguson (1883), Willie Park jnr (1890), Harry Vardon (1904), James Braid (1906), Walter Hagen (1930), Henry Cotton (1938), Dick Burton (1946), Peter Thompson (1957), Bobby Locke (1958), Gary Player (1975) and Greg Norman (1994), have returned to a particular course where they were crowned champion with the claret jug in tow.

Ernie Els will become the 13th player to do so as he returns to the scene of his first Open Championship triumph, Muirfield, with golf’s most coveted trophy in hand along with nine of his countrymen.

South African golf fans will be able to follow closely the exploits of Els, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Tim Clark, Branden Grace, Richard Sterne, George Coetzee, Thomas Aiken, and qualifiers Darryn Lloyd and Justin Harding with SuperSport set to air over 40 hours of the tournament.

Leading up to the start of the tournament on Thursday, SuperSport will also broadcast the 2012 Open Championship official film, highlighting Els’ victory at Royal Lytham and St Annes, as well as highlights from Muirfield 2002.

“Should one of our guys come out on top on Sunday afternoon, we will be on hand for an exclusive interview and a behind the scenes with him,” confirmed SuperSport’s senior golf producer, Louis Hattingh from Muirfield.
