Gerrie Coetzee's business manager Thinus Strydom said the former heavyweight boxer's cancer didn't show up until he was taken to a doctor for scans.
Coetzee, who was 67, succumbed to cancer on Thursday, but the illness, according to Strydom, was only discovered last week, from where he was given a week to live.
Strydom said the family didn't inform Coetzee about the cancer because of the prognosis they received from the doctor.
