There has been some controversy in the build-up to this match due to Pep Guardiola asking supporters to improve on their 38,062 attendance figure against RB Leipzig. At one point, he even made what could be construed as a subtle threat to stand down as manager. It's up to the City fans to create a positive atmosphere today and put that all behind them.

Jon Moss blows his whistle and Southampton kick off. It takes only a matter of seconds before they punt it long and City gain possession. Southampton promptly manage to get it back though.
Redmond wriggles through the defence on Southampton's left and manages to win his team a corner.
Ederson catches the corner and initiates the counter. Sterling races towards the middle of the park before releasing the pass, but play slows down thereafter. Nevertheless, City keep the play going and Bernardo Silva looks to pick out Gundogan in the box from the left. The ball in is intercepted and dealt with.
Jesus launches an early cross in from City's right, but Stephens heads safely into touch for a throw-in.
Gundogan is so nearly played in behind, but he can't quite control the ball as it reaches him from deep.
Grealish wins a foul off Ward-Prowse on the edge of his own box. City have found themselves under pressure from time to time in these opening stages, but that will give them a bit of breathing space.
A Ward-Prowse free-kick from out wide floats towards goal and Ederson is forced to deal with it, which he does.
Fernandinho passes to Sterling, who turns and looks to play Gundogan in behind. Sterling slightly overhits his pass and allows McCarthy to gather.
Walker is picked out in space and delivers a delightful cross to Gundogan at the far post. He just can't keep his header down and misses the target!
Grealish plays a dangerous low cross in from City's left, but Bednarek intervenes before it can reach Sterling.
Gundogan's free-kick poses problems and McCarthy has to tip away at the far post. Man City recycle the ball and Grealish passes to Sterling, who flashes across goal and wide from the edge of the box.
Jesus flashes a delightful ball across the face of goal. It so nearly picks out Silva, but he just can't reach it on the stretch! Southampton survive.
Walker-Peters can't deal with a ball in from City's left and Jesus gets a crack at goal, but Bednarek blocks his shot.
City win a free-kick out wide, just on the edge of the box for a Stephens handball. Gundogan goes straight for goal, but fires off target.
Stephens is receiving medical attention on the field, having pulled up injured and relinquished the ball.
Salisu is on at centre-back for Southampton in place of Stephens in an enforced substitution.
Grealish looks to get a ball in from the left again, but Romeu cuts it out as it arrives in the danger area.
Grealish is urged to shoot from outside the box by the crowd, but he passes to Fernandinho, who chips over the top for Jesus, who heads off target.

Fernandinho shoots from the edge of the box, but Armstrong makes a great block.
Into two minutes of stoppage time we go. Grealish's cross is aimed at Jesus, but Walker-Peters gets there first and heads behind.
Elyounoussi chops inside from the left and shoots from the edge of the box, but it's a comfortable save for Ederson.

Sterling cuts inside from City's right and plays the pass across. Grealish leaves the ball for Jesus, who fires off target. Meanwhile, Walker-Peters has picked up a yellow card for fouling Sterling.
Manchester City allow Southampton to take the ball in their half and Adams is teed up. He flashes a low shot across goal and wide.
Gundogan's corner is an inviting delivery. Ake and Dias both go up for it and perhaps put each other off to an extent. It appears Ake has got the header in, but either way, it's off target.
Manchester City may look to Kevin de Bruyne to turn this game around. They're struggling in midfield right now.
PENALTY, SOUTHAMPTON! Kyle Walker fouls Armstrong in the box and that's a penalty. This will likely be a red card too, assuming it's not overturned by VAR.

Manchester City have their tails up. Grealish looks to find Sterling, who can't quite turn it home at the far post. Mahrez is on for City now in place of Jesus.
Broja, the young on-loan Chelsea striker, is on for Southampton in place of Adams.
Southampton are still looking threatening. Broja looks to pick out Elyounoussi in the danger area, but overhits his ball in from the left.
Ward-Prowse looks to pick out Salisu in the box from a free-kick. Dias heads away.

A blocked Southampton shot leads to a Manchester City counter. De Bruyne plays the pass to Sterling, but Salisu manages to make a vital last-ditch tackle.
De Bruyne's cross picks out Foden at the far post. He draws a save from McCarthy with a header and then follows up. It looks like it's Sterling who has tapped in though! The flag goes up for offside. After a VAR review, the decision is confirmed!
