We are not far from kick off now as the teams begin to make their way onto the pitch.
This should be a well contested match as the home side ride the high of a successful start with their new manager. City will be very weary not to slip up.
City XI: Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Ake, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Rodri, Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Mahrez, Jesus.
Subs: Steffen, Carson, Grealish, Foden, Mbete, Palmer, McAtee, Lavia, Wilson-Esbrand
Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett, Luiz, Nakamba, Bailey, McGinn, Buendia, Watkins.
Subs: Steer, Sanson, Tuanzebe, Young, El Ghazi, Hause, Chukwuemeka, Davis, Ramsey.
Kevin De Bruyne is not ready to return as he is out with coronavirus, while defender Aymeric Laporte is suspended and Ferran Torres is a long-term absentee.
Trezeguet (knee) and Bertrand Traore (thigh) remain out, with the former set to return to U23 action next week and Gerrard hopeful that the latter will be back in training before Christmas. Danny Ings also misses out due to injury.
City are hot on the heels of table-toppers Chelsea and will be eager to keep the pressure on the blues, who face Watford this evening.
Villa have achieved back-to-back wins since their new manager has taken over, but Gerrard will be facing an entirely different challenge tonight as they come up against the Premier League champions. A win tonight would mean that Gerrard has won his three opening games for Villa as they continue to climb the table.
Good evening and welcome to our coverage of this Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester City, live from Villa Park.
KICK OFF: We are underway!
SAVE! An early overload for City as Mahrez slips in Cancelo, who drives the ball towards the near post. Martinez stands firm, though, palming the ball behind for an early City corner.
OVER! Jesus gets a shooting opportunity but he cannot test Martinez, who watches the ball sail over his crossbar.
SAVE! Rodri turns into space in the Villa penalty area and he gets a powerful shot away.
However, Martinez produces another good early save to keep the scores level.
The home side seem to be in a bit of trouble in these early stages as City have started very well and are looking to gain an early lead.
Villa just can't get a foothold in this game. They have barely been out of their own half in the opening eight minutes. Steven Gerrard is looking rather anxious on the touch line at the moment.
CHANCE! A first attack of any note for Villa as Watkins breaks forward. He combines with Buendia before setting up Bailey for a shot, but the winger's goal bound strike is brilliantly blocked by Zinchenko.
PENALTY? Jesus goes down in the penalty area under a challenge from Cash. There are muted City appeals but referee Mike Dean waves them away.
Man City still look a threat but Villa have now got a foothold in this game. They've weathered the early storm...
CLOSE! Luiz drives a dangerous low cross in to the near post in search of Watkins, but Ake does brilliantly to get a boot to the ball ahead of the striker.
SAVE! Ederson collects Konsa's looping header before launching an inch-perfect ball forward for Sterling. The City goalkeeper has turned defence into attack as Sterling picks out Zinchenko, but the full-back's shot is easily gathered by Martinez.
GOAL! Man City lead! Sterling cuts the ball back to the edge of the penalty area and he picks out Dias. The centre-back gets a shot away and it beats an attempted headed clearance from Targett and the dive of Martinez to nestle in the back of the net. Villa 0-1 City.
SUB! Disappointment for Aston Villa as Bailey, who has picked up a knock, is replaced by Young.
Mahrez twists and turns on the edge of the penalty area before getting a shot away. It's a powerful strike but Mings gets his body in the way.
BLOCK! The ball comes out to Jesus on the edge of the penalty area but he cannot squeeze his shot through a crowded penalty area.
City have the ball for an age before working it to the right for Cancelo. He tries to burst into the penalty area but Targett does well to make a crucial tackle.
GOAL! Silva makes it two, and what a goal it is! Jesus's cross finds silva on the edge of the box and the Spaniard struck it first time on the volley, and into the top corner! Perhaps a contender for goal of the season. Villa 0-2 City.
There will be a minimum of two minutes added time.
KICK OFF: We are underway again.
HALF TIME. City go into the break with a comfortable and deserved two goal cushion, thanks to goals from Bernardo Silva and Ruben Diaz. It's a mountain to climb now for Gerrards' Villa as they look to sulvage something from this game. Half time score - Aston Villa 0-2 Man City.
GOAL! Villa get one back! That's just the start Gerrard would have been hoping for. It's brilliant movement from Watkins, who gets to the near post and gets to the ball ahead of Bernardo Silva. He produces a fine finish, sweeping the ball past Ederson at the goalkeeper's near post. Villa 1-2 City.
Cancelo swings a boot at the loose ball and it takes a flick off Targett and flies away for a corner, which comes to nothing for the visitors.
Sterling rolls the ball back for Zinchenko to strike, but leaning back, the full-back blazes the ball high over the crossbar.
Luiz has been sublime today. He drives forward again for the hosts and looks to slide the ball through for Young, but Ake gets himself in the way to make a crucial interception.
WIDE! Mahrez clips a corner to Jesus on the edge of the penalty area. He takes on the volley, but his shot is deflected behind for another corner.
SAVE! Jesus gets the ball and he takes aim from distance again. This time he hits the target but there's not enough power on the strike to beat Martinez, who makes a comfortable save.
CHANCE! McGinn's cross picks out Watkins at the far post. The striker heads the ball back into the danger area and Konsa attacks it. Dias and Ake slide in and it looks like Dias gets a crucial touch ahead of Konsa to turn the ball behind for a corner.
Cash whips the ball into the City box but the cross just evades Luiz, who made a run towards the penalty spot.
SUB! Targett has taken a knock and will not be able to continue. Chukwuemeka is on in his place with Young dropping into the left-back role.
Bernardo Silva gets to the byline and attempts to pull the ball back, but he cannot get the ball past Luiz before Young clears.
CHANCE! It starts with Cancelo, who clips a beautiful pass with the outside of his boot to release Bernardo Silva down the right. The Portugal international looks to return the favour for Jesus, who brings the ball down on the penalty spot, but he can only slice his shot high and wide of the target.
WHAT A SAVE! It's a huge save from Ederson... Buendia slides the ball through for Chukwuemeka, who takes a touch before getting a shot in on goal. However, Ederson sticks out an arm to make a crucial save. The noise level rises again at Villa Park!
SUB! A change for the hosts as Sansom is on in place of Nakamba.
There is just 10 minutes to go of this game as Villa look to push for an equalizer!
Chukwuemeka plays a low cross into the City penalty area but Ake is there to clear for the visitors.
SUB: Former Villa player Jack Grealish comes on for City, in place of Gabriel Jesus.
There will be a minimum of 4 minutes added time.
Mahrez takes a free kick from outside the area and attempts to bend one in, but Martinez is there to make an easy save.
Villa need a goal and are running out of time, but at the moment they're struggling to even get the ball, as City look to see out the victory.
FULL TIME: The referee blows his whistle! The three points belong to the away side who remain within one point of Chelsea. It was a fine effort from Villa, but City proved too much for them, firing two via Silva and Diaz. Watkins got one back for Villa, but in the end it was not enough. Full time at Villa Park - Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City.
