The Black Stars reached the quarter-finals in 2010 and they're entering their fourth World Cup. They qualified by beating Nigeria on the away goals rule in the playoff round.
Portugal needed to go through the playoffs to reach the World Cup. They beat Turkey 3-1 and North Macedonia 2-0. Their last five appearances at the tournament have only seen them pass the Round of 16 on one occasion.
Ghana can call upon Premier League players like Thomas Partey (Arsenal), Tariq Lamptey (Brighton) and Mohammed Salisu (Southampton), amongst others. For Portugal, all eyes will be on clubless forward Cristiano Ronaldo. They have three players from Man City in their ranks in Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva.
Portugal sit ninth in the FIFA World Rankings whilst Ghana are 61st in the world, making them the lowest-ranked team at the tournament.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of Portugal vs Ghana in the FIFA World Cup 2022. This Group H fixture kicks off at 7pm Qatar time.
KICKOFF! Referee Ismail Elfath blows his whistle and Portugal get us underway.
Foul: Ronaldo's first touch gets a massive cheer but his touch isn't great and he gives away a foul.
Portugal have had lost of deep possession so far. Then, Pereira hits it into the channel and Guerreiro wins a corner off Seidu.
Guerreiro delivers the corner, an outswinger from the left for Portugal, but it comes to nothing.
Ghana coach Otto Addo has sit his side up in a back five defensively. Partey and Samed are the midfield two, with Ayew playing behind split strikers in Williams and Kudus.
We have a first real attack now for the Black Stars. Seidu bombs forward from right wingback and swings in a deep cross but Diogo Costa claims with ease in the Portugal goal.
CHANCE! So nearly a goal for Ronaldo. Ghana give it away and Otavio immediately finds Ronaldo in the box with just the goalkeeper to beat. The forward's touch is heavy though and Ati-Zigi does well to smother the opportunity.
WIDE! Portugal shift the ball well and win a corner. It's taken short, Guerreiro delivers well and Ronaldo heads wide at the back post under pressure. That's two warning shots for Ghana.
Portugal have set up in a midfield diamond tonight with Otavia narrow on one side and Joao Felix as Ronaldo's partner. Winger Diogo Jota is injured for the tournament, so that may explain the selection.
Close! Ghana look to release Inaki Williams but he can't quite get the ball under control. The Athletic Bilbao man has one cap for Spain and his brother is actually in the Spain squad for this tournament.
Portugal have had four shots so far and 72% possession. It's almost an attack-vs-defence exercise or a possession session. Ghana will be satisfied to be level at 0-0 though.
Wasteful - Portugal work it down the left and Felix gets time and space to deliver a cross. It's wildly overhit though and sails out for a goalkick.
Another wasteful action now in the match. A ball breaks for Kudus and he just has to release Williams but his pass is too weak and a possible opening goes a-begging.
There isn't much action to report here. Portugal are having shots but not really looking that threatening in this narrow shape.
WIDE! Felix is really not having a good game. Bernardo Silva squares a pass to him on the edge of the area but he skies his left footed effort miles over the crossbar.
Foul: Samed pulls back Fernandes and gets a talking-to from the referee. The Ghana midfielder is playing just his second match for his country and now needs to be careful.
DRAMA! Ronaldo has the ball in the net with a good finish. However, he is adjudged to have pushed Alexander Djiku. Replays show it's the correct call but the Portugal players are not happy.
Ronaldo earns a freekick. Fernandes delivers from an inside right position and Ayew has to get up well to head clear from the waiting Pereira.
Some quick passing from Portugal and Felix's touch reaches Fernandes to shoot... a straightforward save for Ati-Zigi though.
Williams wins a corner after forcing Dias into an error. Rahman puts in two delivers and the second is a real threat before Fernandes heads clear for another corner.
Rahman goes over to take the corner from the left side for Ghana now, an outswinger. Ronaldo gets up highest to clear with his head before the referee blows for a freekick after a Ghana foul on Pereira.
Ghana finally have some possession but they keep going backwards instead of attempting a dribble or cross.
Block! Ronaldo is released down the left. He only has one thing on his mind - taking a shot - and he ends up striking from a very narrow left-sided position where it's easily blocked. Seconds later, he tries to toe poke a loose ball into the box but he doesn't make much contact.
HALF TIME. It's 0-0 at the break with Portugal having all eight shots in the first period. However, they haven't quite battered down the Ghana "bus" and the the African side will probably be more satisfied with how those 45 minutes have gone. Join us in 15 minutes to see if we will have some goals to enjoy. HT: Portugal 0-0 Ghana.
Added time: two minutes have been indicated by the fourth official.
YELLOW, GHANA: Kudus is cautioned for a high foot on Cancelo. It's not been a good evening for the Ajax Amsterdam man so far.
WASTE! A long spell now of sustained final third possession for Portugal. They work it side-to-side with Cancelo delivering a cross before Otavia makes a run onto a pass but skews his cross-cum-shot over the bar.
KICKOFF! The second half is underway - no changes on either side.
YELLOW, GHANA: Otavio is taken down by Ayew, who gets given a yellow card.
Ghana are looking more calm on the ball. Partey finds Kudus, who looks after it well. He moves it to Williams but the Bilbao man's backheel is easily intercepted.
Much better here from Ghana. Seidu goes past Guerreiro down the side and delivers a deep cross. Then Kudus wins a corner but it ends with Seidu dragging a shot wide of the target.
WIDE! Kudus is such an enigma. This time he turns in midfield and drives through a gap with Neves left behind. He strikes a shot with his left foot which flashes wide of Diogo Costa's right-hand upright. It's a much improved second half so far from the Black Stars.
SUB, PORTUGAL: Otavio goes off and on comes Carvalho. An attacking midfielder off for a defensive one. It's hard to see how that helps Portugal break down Ghana.
YELLOW, GHANA: Seidu is booked for a foul on Felix. The contact is minimal and he can feel aggrieved to be cautioned there.
A flashpoint now as Felix and Seidu push their foreheads into each other. The Portugal man may have started the contact but the Ghana wingback displayed more force. Both players are fortunate not to be carded.
Ghana are trying to beat themselves today. Amartey plays a very loose pass into midfield right on the edge of his own area and he can count his blessings that Portugal don't make anything of it.
PENALTY GIVEN! Ronaldo collapses like a sack of potatoes after Salisu makes a little contact on the Portugal forward's leg. Ghana are furious and have surrounded the referee. VAR decides not to overturn the decision.
GOAL, PORTUGAL, RONALDO, 1-0! The 37 year old steps up and fires the penalty into the top left corner. He becomes the first player to score in five World Cups. Portugal 1-0 Ghana.
SUBS, GHANA: Lamptey on for Seidu at right wingback.
WIDE! Partey tries a long-range shot for Ghana but sends it well over the crossbar.
Now Partey makes pass straight out of play as he looked for Rahman's run. The Arsenal man hasn't played anywhere near as well tonight as he has been for the Gunners at club level.
SHOT! Partey breaks Portugal's pressing now with a backheel. Amartey finds Kudus and winger strikes a lovely sht with power but straight at Diogo Costa.
GOAL, GHANA, ANDRE AYEW, 1-1! Kudus runs into space behind Cancelo and cuts the ball back. It goes through the legs of Pereira and Ayew is there to tap home from close range. The African side celebrate wildly and we're level with around 20 minutes to play. Portugal 1-1 Ghana.
SUB, GHANA: Bukari and Jordan Ayew come on. It's surprisingly Andre Ayew and Kudus who go off.
SUB, PORTUGAL: Rafael Leao comes on for Neves.
GOAL, PORTUGAL, JOAO FELIX, 2-1! Fernandes slips a pass down the side for Felix in an inside-right position and the Atletico Madrid dinks it over the onrushing goalkeeper. Andre Ayew was still celebrating his equaliser with the subs bench. Portugal 2-1 Ghana.
GOAL, PORTUGAL, RAFAEL LEAO, 3-1! Just a couple of minutes after coming on and the AC Milan winger has scored. Fernandes gets his second assist of the night as he releases Leao on the left and he strokes the ball into the far corner in Thierry Henry style. Portugal 3-1 Ghana.
OFFSIDE! Ronaldo is sent through on goal and can't finish past Ati-Zigi with a chip but he was well offside anyway and the flag goes up belatedly.
Portugal are readying a triple change to save some legs ahead of their fixture on Monday against Uruguay.
It's a keep-ball exercise now for Portugal and it feels like Ghana's race is run.
SUBS, PORTUGAL: Bernardo Silva, Ronaldo and Joao Felix all go off. On comes Palhinha, Joao Mario and Goncalo Ramos.
GOAL, GHANA, BUKARI, 3-2! Game on? We may have spoken too soon. This is far from over. Rahman gets forward down the left, knocks Cancelo out of the way and delivers a cross which Bukari heads home unchallenged past Diogo Costa. Portugal 3-2 Ghana.
FULL TIME. What a second half! It was 0-0 at the break but we saw five goals in the second period. Ronaldo scored a penalty after he drew a soft foul, then Andre Ayew levelled. Two goals in three minutes for Portugal seemed to seal the win but Ghana pulled one back to make things nervy. I guess Portugal just about did enough but it feels like Ghana had a hand in beating themselves tonight. Thanks for joining us. FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana.
+10' DRAMA! Diogo Costa claims a cross for Portugal. He tries to waste time but he isn't aware of Williams behind him when he drops the ball. The Ghana forward gets to the ball but can't quite get a shot away after slipping in the area. That would have been incredible.
+6' Portugal are managing this injury time well by winning throws and fouls. Ghana aren't helping themselves by giving away silly freekicks to waste their own time.
+5' YELLOW, PORTUGAL: Fernandes is booked for a tactical foul.
+2' SUBS, GHANA: Semenyo and Kyereh come on for Djiku and Samed.
Added time: nine minutes of additional time to be played. This isn't over yet.
YELLOW CARDS: Both Williams and Pereira are cautioned for a scuffle.
