The British Grand Prix was red-flagged after a horror opening-corner multi-car smash at Silverstone on Sunday, with Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo flipped upside down and hurtling over the barrier.

As Max Verstappen pipped pole sitter Carlos Sainz to the first corner there was "carnage" behind with marshalls rushing to Zhou trapped in his stricken car.

George Russell's Mercedes, Alpine's Esteban Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) and the Williams of Alex Albon were also involved.

A specialist crew attended Zhou who was safely lifted out from his car and carried on a stretcher to an ambulance to take him to the medical centre. An FIA statement later announced the Chinese driver and Albon were conscious and being evaluated at the medical centre, prompting cheers from the grandstand.

"We are told driver is okay. Zhou is okay," Valtteri Bottas, his Alfa Romeo teammate, was told over the team radio.The roadworthy members of the grid returned to the pits to wait for the re-start."

Update on Zhou Guanyu:

In a radio statement, Alfa Romeo said: "Zhou is conscious, he is talking, there are no fractures. Considering the circumstances, he is pretty good, pretty well."

This was not the first collision in which the 'halo' device was instrumental in saving a driver from serious injury. Roy Nissany survived after another car driven by Dennis Hauger landed on top his cockpit in which he was saved by the halo. Both escaped unhurt.

Williams are pushing Albon's car back into the garage, so he will not take the restart. A big blow for the team and their chances to test out the upgrades on the FW44, considering the qualifying conditions yesterday had already hampered them.

So Race Control has ruled that the restart will take place in grid order, so that means Verstappen will drop back behind Sainz. Hamilton too who had made it up to P3 will drop two positions.

Albon was nudged into the barrier by Vettel, with Ocon and Tsunoda hitting the Williams as it spun back into the firing line on the track.

Zhou's car actually dug into the gravel and was launched, clearing the tyre barrier completely, hitting the crash fencing and coming to rest between the two. Once more we are indebted to modern F1 technology for the fact that Zhou escaped that without maj

Russell's car is off the truck and has been retrieved by Mercedes. If they could get that fixed by the time this delay ends, then he may be able to restart the race from the pit lane.

Looking back at the incident, Russell clipped the front-right wheel of Gasly's AlphaTauri, causing Russell's Merceded to spear into the side of Zhou's car which was turned upside down and skidded through the gravel.

Mercedes tell Russell he is "matching the Ferraris now" in these race sims, exactly what he will want to hear at his home race. He pits now for soft tyres and returns to the track, told that the "out lap is critical".

Ocon remains in the pits after picking up a crack on the new Alpine sidepod. Russell meanwhile is told he can push harder in his race simulation on the hard tyre, to which he replies that he is pushing.

Some work is going on down at Red Bull on both cars, Sergio Perez's seems to be receiving the most attention, more specifically those upgraded sidepods. Gasly is complaining of no grip in his AlphaTauri.

Leclerc fails to hook up a decent lap on the softs. Sainz does improve in the final sector, but Norris' time still sees him sitting pretty in P2.

Albeit still early in the weekend, Alex Albon is looking strong up in P7 with the upgraded Williams. He is just under two-tenths shy of Alpine's Fernando Alonso, both drivers running the soft C3 tyre.

Verstappen did improve to close to within half a second of Leclerc, but he has been shuffled down a place now by Sainz. 0.081s separates the Ferraris out front.

The track was drying nicely in places, but it was still treacherous on the slicks. Lance Stroll found that out when he spun into the gravel and triggered the red flags, cutting short that late action and the FP1 session.

Leclerc has complained of a "strange upshift in Turn 16 and Turn 17", so Ferrari are going to look into that, but they have plenty of extra work to do if they are to deny Verstappen pole.
