Good news! The race will resume in little over 5 minutes.

03 July 16:57

The British Grand Prix was red-flagged after a horror opening-corner multi-car smash at Silverstone on Sunday, with Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo flipped upside down and hurtling over the barrier.

As Max Verstappen pipped pole sitter Carlos Sainz to the first corner there was "carnage" behind with marshalls rushing to Zhou trapped in his stricken car.

George Russell's Mercedes, Alpine's Esteban Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri) and the Williams of Alex Albon were also involved.

A specialist crew attended Zhou who was safely lifted out from his car and carried on a stretcher to an ambulance to take him to the medical centre. An FIA statement later announced the Chinese driver and Albon were conscious and being evaluated at the medical centre, prompting cheers from the grandstand.

"We are told driver is okay. Zhou is okay," Valtteri Bottas, his Alfa Romeo teammate, was told over the team radio. The roadworthy members of the grid returned to the pits to wait for the re-start."

Carnage at turn one and sadly Alex is out," tweeted Williams.

03 July 16:59

We're ready for the second race start. The drivers are lining up on the grid.

03 July 17:02

Sainz keeps his first place ahead of Verstappen, who is under immediate pressure from Leclerc.

03 July 17:03

Lap 4/52: Sainz leads by 1.2 seconds over Verstappen. Could he be on course for his first win?

03 July 17:03

Leclerc and Perez both suffered front wing damage in the opening lap. We have to see how their performance will be affected.

03 July 17:06

Lap 6/52: Norris and Hamilton are now in 4th and 5th after Perez dives into the pits to replace his front wing.

03 July 17:06

Hamilton passes Norris for fourth. The two drivers are the only Brits left in the race after George Russell's early exit.

03 July 17:09

Lap 8/52: Verstappen closes the gap to Sainz. Expect an attack in the coming laps.

03 July 17:13

Lap 10/52: Sainz goes wide! Verstappen takes the lead of the race.

03 July 17:14

Sainz could be carrying an issue. Ferrari teammate Leclerc is sensing an opportunity to take second place.

03 July 17:15

Lap 12/52: The AlphaTauris take each other out! Both drivers are back to racing.

03 July 17:17

Lap 13/52: Verstappen suffers tyre damage. He enters the pits and rejoins in sixth place. Ferrari is now running in first and second.

03 July 17:18

Verstappen telling his team that something is amiss on his car. Red Bull is looking into it.

03 July 17:20

Yuki Tsunoda receives a five-second penalty for causing a collision with teammate Pierre Gasly.

03 July 17:27

Lap 20/52: Leclerc is losing time behind teammate Sainz, but the team refuses to order the Spaniard to move aside and let the faster Leclerc pass.

03 July 17:27

Hamilton is driving phenomenally, chasing down the Ferrari duo. He is 3.4sec behind them.

03 July 17:29

Lap 21/52: Sainz pits, releasing Leclerc. Sainz rejoins in third place, behind Leclerc and Hamilton.

03 July 17:32

Hamilton is now just 2.0 seconds behind Leclerc. Could he be up for a win?

03 July 17:35

Lap 24/52: Verstappen pits and exits on a set of Hard tyres, but he is passed by Vettel for 7th place.

03 July 17:37

Lap 26/52: Leclerc pits and rejoins on a set of Hard tyres. Hamilton remains out, but should also pit soon.

03 July 17:41

Update on Zhou Guanyu:

In a radio statement, Alfa Romeo said: "Zhou is conscious, he is talking, there are no fractures. Considering the circumstances, he is pretty good, pretty well."

This was not the first collision in which the 'halo' device was instrumental in saving a driver from serious injury. Roy Nissany survived after another car driven by Dennis Hauger landed on top his cockpit in which he was saved by the halo. Both escaped unhurt.

03 July 17:43

Lap 30/52: Ferrari still refusing to order Sainz to let Leclerc pass. Instead, they are encouraging the drivers to fight each other on track, risking damage.

03 July 17:45

Ferrari finally gives the order: "Sainz, let Leclerc pass."

03 July 17:47

Lap 33/52: Leclerc is 18.3sec behind Hamilton. The latter is yet to pit.

03 July 17:49

And running in tenth, Mick Schumacher! The youngster could be on course for his maiden F1 points.

03 July 17:55

Lap 37/52: Ocon passes Verstappen for eighth. The defending champion is suffering after sustaining early damage.

03 July 17:57

Lap 39/52: Ocon is going slow, he has a problem. And that takes Schumacher up to ninth!

03 July 18:00

Lap 40/52: Sainz and Hamilton pit under the safety car, with Leclerc staying out.

03 July 18:08

Lap 44/52: Sainz passes Leclerc for first, Perez passes Hamilton for 3rd.

03 July 18:14

Lap 47/52: What a restart! Hamilton, Perez and Leclerc jostling for position. The revised positions are Sainz leading from Perez, Leclerc and Hamilton.

03 July 18:19

Lap 51/52: Schumacher is chasing down Verstappen, but it's unlikely that the Haas has the legs to pass the Red Bull.

03 July 18:21

Carlos Sainz wins in Britain! And he takes his first win in F1.

03 Jul

And we do not need to wait long for the action to return, the Austrian Grand Prix is coming our way next weekend! So for now, let that classic British Grand Prix sink in, and then we will get ready to do it all again in Austria.

03 Jul

Wow, what an incredible British Grand Prix that was! Leclerc is getting a finger-wagging from Ferrari's team boss Mattia Binotto, probably for criticising the strategy.

03 Jul

Stroll, Latifi, Ricciardo and Tsunoda complete the finishers.

03 Jul

Schumacher finally scores points in Formula 1! He takes P8, with Vettel and Magnussen completing the points.

03 Jul

Leclerc holds on to P4 ahead of Alonso and Norris, P7 for Verstappen at the end of a nightmare race for him, but Perez and Leclerc could not maximise the damage.

03 Jul

It is P2 for Perez and Hamilton completes the podium on home soil, his first of the season. The fastest lap and an extra point for Hamilton too. Perez will keep the place, the stewards will not be taking any action.

03 Jul

Victorious for the first time in Formula 1! Carlos Sainz wins the British Grand Prix!

03 Jul

Schumacher so close to contact there with Verstappen, surely these points can't slip away again.

03 Jul

We are on to the final lap!

03 Jul

Schumacher sniffed an overtake on Verstappen at Stowe. He is P8 and on for those first F1 points. Three laps to go!

03 Jul

Alonso and Norris now are right on Leclerc's tail.

03 Jul

What a move from Hamilton around the outside at Luffield! But Leclerc has muscled his way back into P3! What a race, the fans are going barmy! Hamilton is back into P3 again, passing at Stowe.

03 Jul

Perez has dropped Leclerc, this is now between Hamilton and Leclerc for the podium.

03 Jul

Perez slightly cut the Vale chicane, forcing himself and Leclerc wide then as Hamilton overtook, Perez then squeezed Hamilton at Village, coming back through, as did Leclerc.

03 Jul

Perez has been noted for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.

03 Jul

A deafening roar from the crowd! As Perez and Leclerc scrap, Hamilton takes P2, only for Perez and Leclerc to pass again! This is insane!

03 Jul

Hamilton is fighting back at Perez, which is giving Leclerc some rest bite and Sainz the chance to build his lead.

03 Jul

Leclerc ran wide, allowing Sainz a good run down the Wellington Straight as he passed into Brooklands.

03 Jul

Perez is now right on the back of Leclerc's Ferrari.

03 Jul

Drama. Sainz passes Leclerc to take the lead, Perez has knocked Hamilton off the podium.

03 Jul

Sainz just dropping the hint over radio by telling Ferrari he will be faster than Leclerc. They tell him to give 10 car lengths to Leclerc to give him space. He is not happy with Ferrari "inventing" such things.

03 Jul

Safety Car in this lap.

03 Jul

Norris pits too for soft tyres, he has lost P5 to Alonso.

03 Jul

"That's going to be hard," is Leclerc's blunt response when told of the tyre situation behind him.

03 Jul

Hamilton is not sure that this is the right tyre. Perez has taken the softs too and remains P4. The huge loser here is Leclerc. Verstappen pits for softs too.

03 Jul

And it is, the Safety Car is out. Sainz and Hamilton are in and have soft tyres fitted. Leclerc stays out.

03 Jul

This has to be a Safety Car, he has stopped down the old pit straight.

03 Jul

Ocon has a problem! He looks to be stuck in second gear.

03 Jul

Hamilton quickly trumps the fastest lap set by Leclerc.

03 Jul

Ocon and Verstappen are no strangers to fireworks, but Verstappen does not fight that one too hard, P8 for Ocon.

03 Jul

A loud groan from Sainz after Ferrari tell him to start saving fuel.

03 Jul

Ocon is catching Verstappen and is looking to relieve him of P8.

03 Jul

Norris stops for the hard tyres, McLaren are responding to Alonso who just boxed.

03 Jul

Hamilton comes out then in P3 behind the Ferrari pair, but he has fresher tyres. "Warm-up will be challenging," Mercedes warn.

03 Jul

Hamilton is in, it is the hard tyres but that was a slow stop! 4.4 seconds.

03 Jul

Latifi has been shown the black and white flag now for track limits.

03 Jul

Schumacher has made a move on Latifi for P10, is this the day where that first F1 point finally arrives?

03 Jul

"This is not good enough, we are swapping the cars." Sainz duly lets Leclerc through down the Wellington Straight.

03 Jul

Leclerc had a look into Stowe but Sainz quickly shuts the door, this is not helping Ferrari.

03 Jul

Sainz told he must hit a 1:32.2 target time or he will be ordered to let Leclerc through.

03 Jul

Leclerc has caught Sainz, he asks if he needs to fight for the pass, Ferrari confirms that he does.

03 Jul

A big shoutout to Latifi who in the Williams is running P9. Ocon is starting to close in. Mercedes tell Hamilton that he needs another 1.7 seconds to overcut Leclerc.

03 Jul

"I have no rear and no front now. I don't know what happened to the front wing," says Verstappen as his meltdown continues. Gasly has been shown the black and orange flag, so comes into the pits for what it seems is a retirement.

03 Jul

Hamilton: "Tyres still good." He has a real chance of undercutting Leclerc and then having a clean run at Sainz with fresher tyres.

03 Jul

Verstappen is absolutely raging, he can not understand why he was put onto these tyres when he has damage. "It's like driving on ice," he says.

03 Jul

Leclerc is in and fits the hard tyre, Hamilton leads a race for the first time this season.

03 Jul

"Ah no grip," Verstappen laments. A few laps are probably needed to get them up to temperature.

03 Jul

Verstappen is in again for a new set of hard tyres. Vettel overtakes as Verstappen exits the pits.

03 Jul

"We need full push, full push," Ferrari order Leclerc.

03 Jul

"Tyres are still strong," says Hamilton, he fancies a shot at Leclerc.

03 Jul

A bit of Silverstone deja vu, Hamilton is closing in on Leclerc and looking to take the lead. Mercedes remind Hamilton that the Ferrari is carrying damage.

03 Jul

Bottas is in to retire his Alfa Romeo, what a nightmare of a British Grand Prix it has been for the team.

03 Jul

In comes Sainz, he moves onto a new set of hard tyres.

03 Jul

Sainz is not yet hitting the target lap time set by Ferrari, they are urging him to push more. Leclerc is not happy stuck behind.

03 Jul

Another fastest lap for Hamilton. The stewards were looking at Gasly for forcing Tsunoda off the track, but no further investigation. They are at it again!

03 Jul

Hamilton has set the new fastest lap of the race, he is homing in on the Ferraris, Leclerc's of course wounded.

03 Jul

Tsunoda gets a five-second time penalty for causing a collision with Gasly.

03 Jul

"Okay Max, can confirm it is bodywork damage, loss of rear, is not critical, you are able to continue but you will have a performance loss," Horner tells Verstappen.

03 Jul

"The car is 100% broken."

03 Jul

"Check the tyres otherwise there is something wrong with the car," says Verstappen. He is still not happy with his Red Bull.

03 Jul

A new set of mediums for Verstappen who comes back out in P6.

03 Jul

Verstappen is in trouble! Sainz has retaken the lead! He has a puncture!

03 Jul

Synchronised spinning there for the AlphaTauris! That sends the pair of them down the order. Tsunoda is not happy.

03 Jul

A costly snap of the rear in that Ferrari at Becketts then for Sainz, he is now P2 and defending from his team-mate Leclerc.

03 Jul

Sainz has gone off! That error allows Verstappen to swoop into the lead at the start of the Hangar Straight.

03 Jul

"He is a bit quicker," says Sainz of Verstappen. By the looks of it, he is quite a lot quicker. The gap is five-tenths.

03 Jul

Now Verstappen has DRS against Sainz.

03 Jul

With DRS Hamilton passes Norris into Brooklands.

03 Jul

Perez peels off into the pits, Norris and Hamilton were right on the back of the Red Bull. Verstappen and Leclerc will not be investigated.

03 Jul

Norris has got himself up to P5 and ahead of Hamilton. DRS has been enabled, but Sainz is out of range for Verstapen.

03 Jul

Leclerc had a look at Verstappen and met another bit of light contact, but the positions remain the same. Verstappen and Leclerc have been noted. Perez has a damaged front wing.

03 Jul

Another strong start from Verstappen but Sainz squeezes him and keeps the lead. Leclerc and Perez made contact.

03 Jul

So Zhou, Russell and Albon are the cars out of the race. Ocon and Tsunoda will take the restart.

03 Jul

Sainz and Verstappen both have new sets of medium tyres as the Safety Car leads them out to resume the race. It will be a standing restart after this lap.

03 Jul

The race will restart in around eight minutes. Russell will not feature in it, as he received mechanical assistance after that crash.

03 Jul

Alfa Romeo deliver the news to Bottas about his team-mate that we all wanted to hear! "Zhou is conscious, he's talking, there are no fractures."

03 Jul

Williams are pushing Albon's car back into the garage, so he will not take the restart. A big blow for the team and their chances to test out the upgrades on the FW44, considering the qualifying conditions yesterday had already hampered them.

03 Jul

So Race Control has ruled that the restart will take place in grid order, so that means Verstappen will drop back behind Sainz. Hamilton too who had made it up to P3 will drop two positions.

03 Jul

Albon was nudged into the barrier by Vettel, with Ocon and Tsunoda hitting the Williams as it spun back into the firing line on the track.

03 Jul

Zhou's car actually dug into the gravel and was launched, clearing the tyre barrier completely, hitting the crash fencing and coming to rest between the two. Once more we are indebted to modern F1 technology for the fact that Zhou escaped that without maj

03 Jul

Russell's car is off the truck and has been retrieved by Mercedes. If they could get that fixed by the time this delay ends, then he may be able to restart the race from the pit lane.

03 Jul

Looking back at the incident, Russell clipped the front-right wheel of Gasly's AlphaTauri, causing Russell's Merceded to spear into the side of Zhou's car which was turned upside down and skidded through the gravel.

03 Jul

The FIA's Jo Bauer and Russell are having an animated exchange down in the pit lane, Russell clearly believes Mercedes should be allowed to work on his car and try to get him back in the race.

03 Jul

Some fantastic news, Zhou is out of the car and Alfa Romeo say he is okay, even though he has left the scene on a stretcher.

03 Jul

No investigation from the stewards of the incident.

03 Jul

The stewards have noted that multi-car incident at the start.

03 Jul

Zhou's car appears to be upside down. The extraction team has arrived on the scene.

03 Jul

The cars have returned to the pit lane as we wait for news on Zhou.

03 Jul

Ocon too was caught up in it, that looks like terminal damage on the front-right.

03 Jul

Several cars are involved, Tsunoda has heavy damage, Zhou it is believed had a nasty incident, Russell is running over but the cameras have not followed. Albon is out too.

03 Jul

A lightning start for Verstappen on the softs, he takes the lead, but Russell has crashed out. The red flags are out.

03 Jul

A record 400,000+ attendance for Silverstone across all four days.

03 Jul

Russell has gone against the grain in the top 10 by starting on the hard compound.

03 Jul

Ferrari have got Leclerc's car repaired in time. Verstappen takes the soft tyre for the start, both Ferraris and Perez are on the mediums. The formation lap is underway.

03 Jul

We are set for a dry start to the race with no showers on the approach at this stage.

03 Jul

While the final preparations take place on the grid, make sure to get your second screen sorted for the British Grand Prix to watch along live with Racing Statistics - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdhE54IC_44.

03 Jul

The national anthem is complete, was hoping for a God Save the Queen-Space Man mashup from Sam Ryder! But oh well.

03 Jul

Ferrari is doing some late work on Leclerc's car on the grid, reportedly an electronic issue of some sort.

03 Jul

Vettel and Stroll in the Aston Martins will surely be hoping for a dry race, as the AMR22 did not like the wet in qualifying, resulting in that disappointing double-exit in Q1.

03 Jul

Running through the remainder of the starting order, Pierre Gasly starts from P11, Valtteri Bottas P12, Yuki Tsunoda P13, Daniel Ricciardo P14, Esteban Ocon P15, Alex Albon P16, Kevin Magnussen P17, Sebastian Vettel P18, Mick Schumacher P19 and Lance Stro

03 Jul

Elsewhere in the top 10, Lando Norris starts P6 ahead of Fernando Alonso and George Russell. Norris said he expects Russell to quickly come through, leaving him to battle with Alonso. Zhou Guanyu starts P9 and Nicholas Latifi P10 after a fantastic wet-wea

03 Jul

The pit lane is open, and rain is in the air. A few spits only at the moment, but there are some threatening clouds lingering nearby the circuit.

03 Jul

Lewis Hamilton, starting P5, is certainly one to watch in this race, whether it stays dry or the rain arrives. Already an eight-time winner at Silverstone, a ninth would see him break the record for most wins at a single grands prix.

03 Jul

It is Ferrari-Red Bull again on the second row, Leclerc lining up P3 ahead of Sergio Perez, creating the potential for a four-way battle for victory. Or could there be five drivers involved?

03 Jul

Max Verstappen joins Sainz on the front row, the Red Bull driver believing that a Q3 spin for Charles Leclerc in the other Ferrari had cost him pole, thanks to the yellow flags which were triggered.

03 Jul

Carlos Sainz secured his first career pole yesterday in the wet conditions. It is dry for now, but rain is possible again for the race.

03 Jul

It's race day at Silverstone! We have all the build-up coming your way ahead of lights out in an hour. All times are local.

02 Jul

At the top end of the table, it is Verstappen who leads ahead of Leclerc and Russell.

02 Jul

A nightmare for Aston Martin as both their drivers exit at the first opportunity. Joining them on the way back to the garage is Albon, Magnussen and Schumacher.

02 Jul

Vettel is out! He does not do enough to escape Q1.

02 Jul

Ricciardo moves out of the danger zone but only into 13th.

02 Jul

Russell goes quickest briefly, delighting the home fans, before Verstappen moves back on top.

02 Jul

The rain appears to have eased off if not stopped completely and the track is drying in parts.

02 Jul

The two Mercedes are running well, up into P3 and 4.

02 Jul

Verstappen now leads while Albon shoots up to P2.

02 Jul

Bottas appeared to be the cause of the flag with a spin.

02 Jul

A yellow flag is being waved briefly but the track is green once again.

02 Jul

So we have our first quick laps and Charles Leclerc currently leads.

02 Jul

All of the cars are on the inters for the start of this session.

02 Jul

So it's green light on the session and there are plenty of cars out on track.

02 Jul

It's a rather ominous scene over Silverstone with a thick grey mist rolling in as if the White Walkers from Game of Thrones were on their way.

02 Jul

And here comes the rain...

02 Jul

Latifi has made it! he reaches Q3 for the first time in his career.

02 Jul

So was tick over the three minutes remaining mark is it Gasly, Bottas, Tsunoda, Ricciardo and Ocon who are facing elimination.

02 Jul

Latifi is putting in the quali performance of his life so far as he is one course to reach Q3.

02 Jul

The rain has increased to much heavier according to Sky's Ted Kravitz.

02 Jul

But then the Mexican is quickly beaten by his team-mate who records a 1:41.486.

02 Jul

Perez is the first driver to break into the 1:42s.

02 Jul

Before today, Latifi was the only driver not to have reach Q2 and that is now no longer true as the Canadian makes it.

02 Jul

According to the Mercedes garage, light rain is expected to sprinkle on the track throughout Q2 and Q3.

02 Jul

So five have left and 15 remain in conditions which are looking better than 20 minutes ago.

02 Jul

And that's all from today's qualifying coverage. It's a Ferrari 1-3 with Verstappen sandwiched between them. Lewis Hamilton is the highest British driver in front of his home crowd. Join us again tomorrow at 3PM for the British Grand Prix.

02 Jul

It's a Sainz pole! The first of his career. Verstappen will start P2 and Leclerc in P3.

02 Jul

Verstappen can't improve, Sainz is pole as it stands but the Mercedes drivers are yet to cross the line.

02 Jul

Sainz takes provisional pole!

02 Jul

The chequered flag has been waved so we will wait and see how these final laps fare.

02 Jul

Carlos Sainz battles to keep it on track but holds it.

02 Jul

Verstappen finds the grip and he finds the speed, moving to the top of the pile.

02 Jul

Verstappen is off again, the Dutchman is having a real difficulty keeping it on the track at the moment.

02 Jul

Zhou moves top! Behind him is Norris then Leclerc.

02 Jul

A big spin from Verstappen! It ruins his lap but thankfully for him and Red Bull, he keeps it on track.

02 Jul

Here we go then. The rain has stopped (for now) and Ferrari are the front of the pit lane waiting to get out on the track and put a lap in.

02 Jul

So it's Gasly, Bottas, Tsunoda, Ricciardo and Ocon who are exiting qualifying at the Q2 stage as we move onto the shootout for pole.

01 Jul

Let's hope the weather clears up for FP2, we'll catch up with you in 90 minutes or so!

01 Jul

For what it's worth, Valtteri Bottas tops the session with half the field having not set a lap time.

01 Jul

You know how I said this would be a really interesting FP1 because of all the upgrades on the cars? I was wrong.

01 Jul

Red flag. Session over. Lance Stroll has beached it at Copse and that's the session done.

01 Jul

Plenty of cars out now, shame there's hardly any time left! Typical British weather, eh.

01 Jul

He lost about seven seconds in the second sector compared to Valtteri Bottas' fastest inter time. It's the crossover time.

01 Jul

He managed to fy through the first sector but he's really had to lift through Luffield/Woodcote/Copse, where the track is at its wettest.

01 Jul

Lewis is plodding around and has swapped to slick tyres. Here we go.

01 Jul

Lewis is back out on track, completely on his own, the fans are cheering him around but this is as good as it's getting right now.

01 Jul

Silverstone toyed with us, and it seems to be raining again. Wonderful.

01 Jul

Elsewhere, there are no engine penalties happening heading into the weekend. Zhou Guanyu has had a full PU change, while Carlos Sainz has taken a new MGU-H, MGU-K and turbocharger, all from within their respective pools.

01 Jul

Lewis has given the fans on the pit straight a big wave, to make up for the lack of cars on track.

01 Jul

Aston Martin are only around the corner, and they've also made significant additions to the AMR22, while Red Bull and Ferrari have only made minor changes this weekend.

01 Jul

Several teams have brought a new floor with them to Silverstone, not least Mercedes, who have brought a raft of upgrades that seemingly focus on improving the aerodynamics on the W13.

01 Jul

Right, let's talk about upgrades. Alex Albon's Williams has had a massive facelift, with an updated halo, front wing, rear suspension, a new engine cover, even less paint to save every possible gram, and even more besides.

01 Jul

Anyway. Still not a large amount happening on track as it dries. Starting to run out of riddles already.

01 Jul

The answer? A bank.

01 Jul

Right, let's have another riddle. I have branches, but no leaves, fruit or a trunk. What am I?

01 Jul

This is where Martin Brundle would point out that there's no better way of clearing water than with a Formula 1 car. With that, Lewis Hamilton emerges from the pit lane.

01 Jul

Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas pretty much have the track to themselves at the moment. There's still a fair bit of spray coming off his tyres, definitely inter conditions for the moment.

01 Jul

The sun is now out and there's even a bit of heat haze on track at Silverstone, which will hopefully dry up the surface relatively quickly.

01 Jul

Only six drivers have set a time so far, but Carlos Sainz has done something of a flyer to put himself top on a 1:42.9.

01 Jul

The rain has stopped, thank the racing Gods for that. Hopefully we'll get more representative running soon.

01 Jul

The answer? All of them.

01 Jul

Only Charles Leclerc has set a timed lap so far. Anyone fancy a question? Here we go: What month has 28 days of the year?

01 Jul

It wouldn't be the UK if there weren't umbrellas up throughout the crowd, yet packed grandstands anyway?

01 Jul

Only a handful of drivers have dared to run around in the early stages, unsurprising in the conditions really - though both Ferrari drivers have been involved.

01 Jul

'Conditions could worsen' is a polite way of putting it. It's starting to pelt down at Silverstone.

01 Jul

A couple of sets of intermediate tyres on show here as the drivers get to grips on their installation laps, with predictions that conditions could worsen during the session.

01 Jul

Green light! We're underway at Silverstone.

01 Jul

Saying that, there looks to be a little bit of rain in the air, so that could well put teams off trying their new parts if the weather turns. Let's wait and see.

01 Jul

This could end up being one of the more interesting FP1 sessions of the year here, especially from Mercedes' point of view, given how much has changed. It should be intriguing.

01 Jul

There are reports of long queues of traffic heading into Silverstone at the moment, so hopefully the fans affected will be able to watch the action in person.

01 Jul

Most of the teams have brought upgrades to Silverstone, the biggest of which coming at Mercedes, Aston Martin and Williams, at least on Alex Albon's car.

01 Jul

Good afternoon! Welcome to our British Grand Prix commentary for the weekend on PlanetF1. We'll start off with FP1 from 1pm UK time.

01 Jul

Good morning and welcome to Silverstone in Northamptonshire, home of the British Grand Prix, round 10 of the 2022 F1 World Championship.

01 Jul

Well then, a rather mixed-up order on a dry track. If Hamilton and Norris can stick with Ferrari and Red Bull come qualifying and the race, we could be in for a cracker! There is one more hour of practice to go though before qualifying, so join us tomorro

01 Jul

Bottas claims P11, Vettel P12, Ocon P13, Albon P14, Zhou P15, Tsunoda P16, Magnussen P17, Gasly P18, Schumacher P19 and Latifi P20.

01 Jul

A very impressive P3 for Norris, with Verstappen claiming P4. Leclerc is P5, Alonso P6, Perez P7, Russell P8, Ricciardo P9 and Stroll P10.

01 Jul

It is a strong P2 finish for Hamilton nonetheless as Sainz tops FP2.

01 Jul

Not ideal there though for Hamilton as a hard ride over the kerb causes some bodywork to break free.

01 Jul

The chequered flag is out. Mercedes though are testing out what it is like to follow out there in the new generation of Formula 1 cars, Russell tailing Hamilton before making a pass.

01 Jul

Mercedes tell Russell he is "matching the Ferraris now" in these race sims, exactly what he will want to hear at his home race. He pits now for soft tyres and returns to the track, told that the "out lap is critical".

01 Jul

Ocon remains in the pits after picking up a crack on the new Alpine sidepod. Russell meanwhile is told he can push harder in his race simulation on the hard tyre, to which he replies that he is pushing.

01 Jul

It may be his 33rd birthday today, at the track where he debuted back in 2011, but Daniel Ricciardo will not be too happy based on his current showing in this session. While Norris is raising eyebrows up in P3, Ricciardo trails his team-mate by eight-tent

01 Jul

Sebastian Vettel has returned to the garage thanks to some damage picked up to the new floor on his Aston Martin.

01 Jul

Perez too returns to the track, but his first soft-tyre push lap is good enough for only P7. Another six-tenths are needed if he is to challenge team-mate Verstappen.

01 Jul

Interesting scenes down at McLaren as the rear jack fails, that won't have been a comfy drop back down to the floor for Norris. Out on the track meanwhile, Verstappen narrows his deficit to Sainz to two-tenths after finally heading out there onto the trac

01 Jul

Some work is going on down at Red Bull on both cars, Sergio Perez's seems to be receiving the most attention, more specifically those upgraded sidepods. Gasly is complaining of no grip in his AlphaTauri.

01 Jul

Leclerc fails to hook up a decent lap on the softs. Sainz does improve in the final sector, but Norris' time still sees him sitting pretty in P2.

01 Jul

No word yet on any deletion of Sainz's time. Hopefully the stewards haven't nodded off.

01 Jul

Leclerc is preparing for his opening push lap on the softs.

01 Jul

Sainz complains that he lost a lot through the high speed due to the bouncing.

01 Jul

The times are ramping up on the softs as Sainz goes P1, that despite an off at Copse. He may well lose that time. Norris is only a tenth adrift.

01 Jul

The rear of the upgrade-less Williams FW44 steps out on Nicholas Latifi, wrecking that push lap and leaving him still P19.

01 Jul

Russell switches to the softs, but it is still only good enough for P7. He trails team-mate Hamilton by two-tenths despite that move to the softer rubber.

01 Jul

Albeit still early in the weekend, Alex Albon is looking strong up in P7 with the upgraded Williams. He is just under two-tenths shy of Alpine's Fernando Alonso, both drivers running the soft C3 tyre.

01 Jul

Verstappen did improve to close to within half a second of Leclerc, but he has been shuffled down a place now by Sainz. 0.081s separates the Ferraris out front.

01 Jul

"Bouncing a lot in the high speed," says Hamilton, not what Mercedes were hoping for. He heads back to the pits for some set-up changes to address that.

01 Jul

Russell now finds Norris in the way which triggers some fresh radio complaints. Maybe Lando is just trying to bring that fun side out of George again which he feels has been lost since that move to Mercedes.

01 Jul

A 1:29.6 from Leclerc as he raises the bar once more, nine-tenths for Verstappen to find on his title rival.

01 Jul

Sainz takes us into the 1:29s, but a cleaner lap definitely looked possible.

01 Jul

"Something is just touching," Verstappen reports, he still is not happy with that Red Bull. The wind is also troubling him.

01 Jul

A few bits of drama out there as the wind catches out Lando Norris, while George Russell was far from pleased with an obstructing AlphaTauri.

01 Jul

And it is a 1:31.4 for Verstappen on the medium C2 tyres, Charles Leclerc smashes that though by six-tenths as Carlos Sainz slots into P2. An early statement made by Ferrari.

01 Jul

Max Verstappen is hearing a "weird noise" in his Red Bull RB18, "all okay" he is told from the pit wall as he sets off on a flying lap.

01 Jul

The drivers flood out of the pit lane, a nice mix of hard, medium and soft tyres in action.

01 Jul

There's the green light, FP2 is underway!

01 Jul

Conditions are far brighter out there on the eve of FP2, so expect plenty of action in this session.

01 Jul

FP2 is now only 10 minutes away, so remember to get your second screen up and running and watch along live with Racing Statistics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OfCsOA4OA0.

01 Jul

The track was drying nicely in places, but it was still treacherous on the slicks. Lance Stroll found that out when he spun into the gravel and triggered the red flags, cutting short that late action and the FP1 session.

01 Jul

There was a flurry of late activity though, Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas claiming P1 ahead of former team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.

01 Jul

The opening practice session was a nightmare for the engineers, with rain showers severely hampering the ability to test out the upgrades which multiple teams have brought to Silverstone.

01 Jul

Welcome back to Silverstone everyone! We have all the build-up coming your way ahead of FP2 which is 30 minutes away. All times are local.

02 Jul

It is not a foregone conclusion yet though. Rain may still arrive for qualifying, at which point, the battle for pole is wide open. Make sure to join us in around 90 minutes as we kick off the build-up to Q1.

02 Jul

Leclerc has complained of a "strange upshift in Turn 16 and Turn 17", so Ferrari are going to look into that, but they have plenty of extra work to do if they are to deny Verstappen pole.

02 Jul

Ocon finishes P11, Vettel P12, Zhou P13, Albon P14, Gasly P15, Stroll P16, Tsunoda P17, Ricciardo a very disappointing P18, Latifi P19 and Magnussen P20.

02 Jul

It is P3 for Leclerc ahead of the Mercedes duo of Russell and Hamilton. P6 for Sainz. Norris, Bottas, Schumacher and Alonso complete the top 10.

02 Jul

And that is the end of FP3. Verstappen tops the session and looks well in control ahead of qualifying, his team-mate Perez leading the rather distant chasing pack.

02 Jul

"Rear is bouncing a lot," says Hamilton. Suddenly the situation for Mercedes is no longer as positive. They have pace to find and once more some bouncing to address.

02 Jul

Hamilton is heading back out, but on a used set of softs.

02 Jul

Russell can't break the half-second barrier to Verstappen with his latest push lap.

02 Jul

Perez makes it a Red Bull one-two, but he is still four-tenths down on Verstappen.

02 Jul

A 1:27.9 from Verstappen, on fresh soft tyres, well then. The pack thought they were closing in, Verstappen just changed the goalposts again.

02 Jul

Leclerc now goes P2, a measly 0.002s slower than Verstappen, but the latter is improving big time.

02 Jul

"A bit of bouncing down into Turn 6," says Russell, but it certainly was not to the extent that we have seen at times from Mercedes this season.

02 Jul

Russell puts himself back in the mix too in P3, 0.062s down on Hamilton. Please oh please let us have a six-way scrap for pole.

02 Jul

It is an alarming half-second gap for Perez in P6 to Verstappen. For the neutral though, it is great to see half a second covering the top six.

02 Jul

Vettel bails at Village as Pierre Gasly approaches, telling Aston Martin to warn him sooner in future.

02 Jul

Hamilton swiftly responds though, a purple final sector to narrow Verstappen's advantage to just 0.102s.

02 Jul

Verstappen shaves off another tenth, so his buffer is back up to three-tenths.

02 Jul

02 Jul

So, a light rain shower is on the way, which explains the early qualy runs. Max Verstappen has shot to the top of the timings on a 1:28.5! Leclerc is going to need three-tenths if he is to challenge that time.

02 Jul

"No bouncing," Russell says meanwhile. Que the party down in the Mercedes garage!

02 Jul

Championship leader Max Verstappen managed only P4 and has a few tenths to find, while for Ferrari's Charles Leclerc it is half a second, power unit problems hampering him in FP2 after a showery FP1 of limited running.

02 Jul

Sainz's former team-mate Lando Norris pumped in an impressive time in the McLaren to end FP2 in P3, within two-tenths of Sainz's benchmark. Can he continue that form on home soil in the lead-up to qualifying?
