18 March 19:35

Max Verstappen is out of qualifying! The driver exits his car, bringing his dominant showing to an end.

18 March 19:37

What a turn-around! While all the focus was on Verstappen, the action did not stop on the track. Alonso is quickest from Perez and Leclerc.

18 March 19:43

Perez is quickest at the end of Q2, just ahead of Alonso. Leclerc is third quickest.

The big shock of the session was Max Verstappen's exit. An engine issue forced him to retire the car from the session. The Red Bull driver was in a class of his own throughout the weekend, and it's unfortunate that it ended this way.

18 March 19:49

Q3 is underway. So, who will be on pole for tomorrow's race? Fernando Alonso is chasing his first pole since Germany 2012!

18 March 19:52

Alonso sets the benchmark time of the session: a 1:28.925.

18 March 19:53

Leclerc displaces Alonso at the top, as does Russell. Alonso is down in third.

18 March 19:55

Perez puts in a massive lap! A 1:28.265 puts him on preliminary pole. He is nearly half a second quicker than Leclerc in P2.

18 March 19:57

3min remaining: The ten remaining drivers are heading out for a final flurry.

18 March 20:02

Sergio Perez is on pole! He is followed across the line by Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso. Leclerc will serve a 10-place grid penalty, promoting Alonso to 2nd on the starting grid.

18 March 20:11

Sergio Perez managed to secure pole position for tomorrow's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Mexican secured the position for the first time in his F1 career in 2022 at the same venue, and repeats the feat for a second consecutive year.

It is the Red Bull driver's second career pole position.

Charles Leclerc managed to put his Ferrari on second, but he will serve a 10-place grid penalty, dropping him to 12th for the race. This will promote Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso from third to second.

Perez's teammate, Max Verstappen, had to retire from qualifying after suffering from in engine issue. He will start down in 15th place, provided he is not taking any further penalties.

19 March 16:09

Hello and welcome to our live coverage for this evening's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix! We're less than three hours away from the race's start. The action gets underway at 19:00 SA time.

19 March 18:58

This race is literally anyone's. Sergio Perez is in prime position to take the win, but Fernando Alonso could play a factor.

19 March 19:03

The cars are lining up, we're set for a cracker of a race!

19 March 19:05

Alonso jumps Perez at the start, leading into Turn 1 from Perez, Russell and Stroll!

19 March 19:07

Lap 3/50: Fernando Alonso incurs a 5-second time penalty for an incorrect position on the starting grid. He leads from Perez by 0.8 seconds.

19 March 19:10

Lap 4/50: Perez passes Alonso into Turn 1, becoming the new race leader. Behind them, Russell is more than 2 seconds behind.

19 March 19:19

Lap 10/50: Perez extends his advantage over Alonso to one second. They are almost six seconds clear of Russell in third.

Verstappen is gradually making his way up the grid, now up into 10th having started in 15th. He is chasing down Hamilton (9th) and Leclerc (8th).

19 March 19:30

Lap 16/50: Perez leads by 5 seconds over Alonso. Russell is still in 3rd, with Leclerc and Verstappen behind.

Verstappen trails Leclerc by 0.8sec and could go ahead on Lap 17.

Leclerc pits to replace his Soft tyres and he is back out on the Hard.

19 March 19:32

Lap 18/50: Safety Car deployed as marshals remove Lance Stroll's stricken Aston Martin from the track.

19 March 19:35

Drivers are diving into the pits to replace their tyres under the safety car. Stroll's (pictured) exit from the race has turned the strategies on their heads, but the big winner is Verstappen who finds himself in fourth place behind Perez, Alonso, and Russell.
Drivers are diving into the pits to replace their tyres under the safety car. Stroll's (pictured) exit from the race has turned the strategies on their heads, but the big winner is Verstappen who finds himself in fourth place behind Perez, Alonso, and Russell.

19 March 19:40

Lap 21/50: We're racing again as Perez keeps the lead from Alonso. Russell is under immediate pressure from Verstappen, who is followed by Sainz, Hamilton, and Leclerc.

19 March 19:46

Lap 25/50: Verstappen is up into second place, now chasing down Perez who is 5.5 seconds up the road. Alonso is third.

The two Mercedes of Russell and Hamilton are 4th and 5th, with Sainz (6th) and Leclerc (7th) behind for Ferrari. Ocon and Gasly are next for Alpine, with Tsunoda completing the top 10 in his AlphaTauri.

19 March 19:56

Lap 31/50: Perez leads Verstappen by 5 seconds. We're still to see if the two Red Bull teammates will battle each other by the race's end.

19 March 20:01

Lap 35/50: The gap between Perez and Verstappen is don to 4.8 seconds. With 15 laps remaining, can Verstappen take the fight to his charging teammate?

19 March 20:08

Lap 40/50: Verstappen complaining to his team that his car makes a 'weird noise' at high speeds. The team confirmed they'll be looking into it. The gap to Perez is still 4.7 seconds.

19 March 20:16

Lap 45/50: Perez and Verstappen have been told by Red Bull that they can push to the flag. But it's safe to assume that the Mexican has the win over his Dutch teammate.

19 March 20:23

Perez begins the final lap of the race. This will be win number 5 for the Mexican.

19 March 20:28

Sergio Perez has done enough to secure victory in the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Mexican driver started the race from pole position, but lost the lead to Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. But a few laps into the race, the Red Bull pilot retook the position and never gave it up.

His teammate, Max Verstappen, started the race in 15th place after a mechanical issue impacted his qualifying. Still, it wasn’t long before he found himself in a podium position and eventually settling for second behind his teammate.

Alonso finished in third place, but risked losing the position after incurring a post-race five-second penalty. Fortunately, he managed to stay 5.1 seconds ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, securing the position.

The position was Alonso's 100th podium finish in Formula 1.

19 March 20:44

Red Bull dominated the second Formula 1 Grand Prix of the season in Jeddah on Sunday as Sergio Perez, who started from pole position, won, while teammate Max Verstappen charged through the field from 15th to finish second.

Two-time champion Fernando Alonso, who started on the front row but was hit with a five-second penalty during the race, finished a distant third in his Aston Martin. He was closely followed by the Mercedes pair George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

The Red Bull pair reversed their finishing positions in the season-opening Bahrain GP. Verstappen, who was halted by mechanical problems in qualifying, held on to the championship lead by picking up an extra point for driving the fastest circuit of the race in his 50th and last lap.

19 March 20:51

BREAKING: Fernando Alonso stripped of third place, with Mercedes' George Russell promoted into the position with Alonso dropping to fourth.

Alonso was penalised for not being in the correct position when the race started and was handed a five-second penalty for it. He served it during his pitstop, but Race Control found the Aston Martin team guilty of touching Alonso's car in the five seconds the car was stationary.

After the podium celebrations, Race Control confirmed that Alonso has been hit with a 10-sec post-race time penalty.

19 Mar

Plenty of frowns for Max and his father Jos, and after a weekend to cool off, then it will be onto Albert Park for the Australian Grand Prix, where Verstappen will look to respond to his team-mate, who already quite the king of street circuits, is now his

19 Mar

So, Perez does not take over as Championship leader, but he did make a huge statement here going from pole to victory. Sure, Verstappen started P15, but after that Safety Car restart, Perez had his team-mate well under control, a team-mate who has gone in

19 Mar

Missing out on the points are Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Zhou, De Vries, Piastri, Sargeant, Norris and Bottas. DNFs for Albon and Stroll.

19 Mar

Hamilton, Sainz, Leclerc, Ocon, Gasly and Magnussen complete the top 10.

19 Mar

Verstappen takes P2, the fastest lap and that bonus point. Alonso completes the podium, as it stands, Russell outside of that five-second window. That is podium 100 for Alonso!

19 Mar

Redemption for Perez, he wins the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix!

19 Mar

Russell said he is "pushing like a madman" to stay within five seconds. Verstappen is pushing for the fastest lap.

19 Mar

There must be some unheard conversation going on, Aston Martin say they think they are "clean" but want Alonso to build a five-second gap on Russell. Onto the last lap and it is 4.8 seconds.

19 Mar

McLaren tell Norris not to make it difficult for Piastri, and he duly concedes P16 to his team-mate.

19 Mar

Mercedes tell Russell that Alonso may get another five-second penalty, not clear at all what that could be for.

19 Mar

Verstappen wants to go for the fastest lap and stop Perez taking over as World Championship leader. Red Bull are not interested.

19 Mar

And finally, Magnussen has snatched P10 from Tsunoda, can he respond? He is very angry, that's for sure.

19 Mar

Tsunoda is still doing a fantastic impression of a brick wall to keep Magnussen out of the points. Piastri meanwhile tried to get the jump on Norris, initially getting ahead, but Norris goes around the outside at Turn 1, passing with the inside line at Tu

19 Mar

Even with DRS McLaren's Norris and Piastri cannot find a way past Sargeant. Bottas says something is "not right" with his Alfa Romeo.

19 Mar

And Red Bull seem to have dropped that plan, their drivers are "free to push". Perez is on for 26 points with the race win and fastest lap bonus point.

19 Mar

Perez is rather suspicious as Red Bull ask him to aim for a target lap time that is slower than Verstappen's. It would not be enough for Verstappen to catch him, but it is easy to understand why he is wary.

19 Mar

Sargeant and De Vries almost come to blows at the hairpin as De Vries comes through. Norris tries to follow but cannot pull it off.

19 Mar

Red Bull are confident that it is just a little bit of wear causing that issue for Perez.

19 Mar

Now Perez has "a bit of a long brake pedal".

19 Mar

Right, Verstappen is gaining ground on Perez again, even though he says this issue is "still there".

19 Mar

Verstappen is dropping back, Red Bull say they are happy, Verstappen definitely is not.

19 Mar

Oh no, Verstappen is feeling further issues with the driveshafts. This being what eliminated him from qualifying. Interestingly, both Red Bulls just cut Turn 23. Something for the stewards to look at?

19 Mar

Alfa Romeo are gambling on a set of softs for Bottas who was running at the back. Zhou got the fastest lap in Bahrain, now it may be Bottas' turn here.

19 Mar

Hulkenberg was a bit too busy looking in his mirrors there as he brushes the outside wall, he got away with that one.

19 Mar

Verstappen is now 11 seconds clear of Alonso, such is that huge pace advantage for Red Bull. There is very little gap meanwhile between Magnussen and Tsunoda, Magnussen having locked up into Turn 1 such was his closing speed. Tsunoda retains P10 and that

19 Mar

Leclerc, understandably, is not happy being stuck down in P7. His title dreams in 2023 are really starting to look like a long shot.

19 Mar

Hulkenberg looked to be weaving down the straight there in defence against Sargeant. The stewards may have a look at that one.

19 Mar

A lock-up sends Leclerc off at the opening chicane. Those hard tyres will not thank him for that.

19 Mar

Verstappen sets a new fastest lap of the race, he is now within five seconds of Perez. Russell meanwhile has upped the pace to pull away from Hamilton.

19 Mar

Sargeant is making sure that Williams still have something to fight for this evening, he is looking to relieve Hulkenberg of P12.

19 Mar

Russell used Alonso's penalty as an excuse for not yielding to Hamilton...and was then told that Alonso served it already. Got to respect the effort.

19 Mar

Hamilton closes in on Russell down the straight but cannot make the pass, this is doing Mercedes no good if they are to catch Alonso. Ferrari behind are falling away.

19 Mar

Sargeant passes his team-mate as Albon stays out, but now Albon has eased off, he will need to crawl back to the pits.

19 Mar

Albon is struggling to keep his Williams on the track, "brake failure" he reports.

19 Mar

Like earlier in the race, Alonso used the DRS there to keep Verstappen within reach, but the Dutchman has quickly dropped Alonso out of that one-second window.

19 Mar

Mercedes may need to consider asking Russell to move over as Hamilton on the medium rubber approaches.

19 Mar

Verstappen reels Alonso in instantly, that RB19 is just an unstoppable rocketship in a straight line. Red Bull one and two, and it will take scenes reminiscent of yesterday to stop them now.

19 Mar

Only Alonso and Perez ahead now for Verstappen to clear. Sainz meanwhile has been warned for weaving down the pit straight in defense against Hamilton.

19 Mar

DRS enabled and Verstappen breezes past Russell before even getting to the last corner. That speed difference was crazy.

19 Mar

There was some scepticism over whether that Safety Car was needed for Stroll's stranded Aston Martin. The FIA say that the GPS showed his car as stopped on the track, so they did not want to take any risks.

19 Mar

Verstappen is looking for a way past Russell as Hamilton closes in.

19 Mar

Hamilton looks to go around the outside of Sainz at Turn 1, no can do there, but better momentum out of the chicane helps him through into P5.

19 Mar

Another big winner from that Safety Car period is AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda, now up to P8.

19 Mar

Perez comfortably retains the lead this time.

19 Mar

Leclerc is far from happy with his race engineer after being told to push hard up to Safety Car line one, but told too late for his liking. Safety Car is coming in.

19 Mar

Hamilton's race also just took a big upturn, he is P6 but on the medium tyre against all those around him on the hard rubber which he struggled on.

19 Mar

Alonso serves the five-second penalty and then the mechanics go to work, he stays ahead of Russell and Hamilton. Perez retains the lead, unlike last year when the Safety Car came out, and Alonso is still P2. The big winner, Verstappen! He is now P4.

19 Mar

Red Bull are going to call both drivers in, Alonso comes in too.

19 Mar

Alonso has just passed the pit entry, awful timing there for Stroll's team-mate. Safety Car deployed.

19 Mar

Stroll has been told to stop the car! He is out.

19 Mar

Hard tyres for Leclerc too who has now also got ahead of Stroll! A double-strategy success for Ferrari.

19 Mar

A new set of hard tyres for Sainz as well, the overcut has worked, he is now comfortably ahead of Stroll.

19 Mar

Gasly now boxes for the hard tyre. It remains to be seen how this compound will perform since Hamilton is struggling a little on it.

19 Mar

Stroll is into the pits for hard tyres, after Ferrari had told Sainz to box, and he didn't. Seems Ferrari have dummied Aston Martin there. Verstappen makes the pass on Ocon at Turn 1.

19 Mar

Leclerc now is up to P6 as he breezes past Ocon, it feels like the DRS is a little too effective here this evening. Alonso has dropped to four seconds behind Perez, but is happy on his tyres.

19 Mar

Hamilton shuts the door at the final corner, but can do nothing to keep Verstappen behind at Turn 1. P8 now for Verstappen.

19 Mar

Now it is Verstappen lining-up Hamilton, we know how this usually goes!

19 Mar

Gasly is easily picked off by his former team-mate Verstappen at the final corner.

19 Mar

"The grip sucks on this tyre," says a rather frustrated Hamilton.

19 Mar

"Plan A, definitely Plan A," is still the way Aston Martin want to go, and Alonso agrees. That's a one-stop strategy. A black and white warning flag for Hamilton, who this time can do nothing to stop Leclerc passing at Turn 1.

19 Mar

Nice easy move for Verstappen on Zhou Guanyu into Turn 1, he is into the top 10. The stewards have noted Hamilton meanwhile for weaving down the straight.

19 Mar

Verstappen is not quite storming through as some feared at this stage, while Perez cannot shake off the attention of Alonso.

19 Mar

Now Hamilton will have Leclerc for company, as he passes Gasly at the opening chicane.

19 Mar

Verstappen has cleared the Haas' and is now P11, Leclerc still P9.

19 Mar

DRS is helping Alonso to keep in touch with Perez, while Russell has Stroll on the scene in the hunt for that final podium spot. Hamilton is still P7 and on the hard tyre now has Gasly all over his rear wing.

19 Mar

As for Alonso's penalty, it appears he was too far left in his grid box. Piastri meanwhile it seems picked up his damage on that first lap in a hit with Alpine's Pierre Gasly, the seat that the Aussie, of course, turned down.

19 Mar

Alonso is powerless to defend from a DRS-aided Perez into Turn 1, Perez leads.

19 Mar

And now Norris, who started P19 in the other McLaren, is also in the pits for a new front wing. What a nightmare start to the season for them!

19 Mar

Looking further back, Leclerc is already up to P9, and Verstappen has gained a couple of spots to now run P13.

19 Mar

And Piastri is in for a set of fresh softs and a new front wing. Heartbreaking for the Aussie after making it into Q3 yesterday. Five-second time penalty for Alonso for an "incorrect starting location".

19 Mar

Oh no, Alonso is being investigated for a start procedure infringement. Oscar Piastri is reporting damage on his McLaren.

19 Mar

Wow, Stroll swoops around the outside of Sainz at Turn 13 for P4, great move!

19 Mar

And away we go! Perez tries to squeeze Alonso but it's not enough, Alonso leads!

19 Mar

Medium tyres for most of the grid, Hamilton goes a different way on the hards, Leclerc meanwhile is going aggressive on the softs. The formation lap is underway.

19 Mar

Just a few minutes to go now then until Perez leads them away for the formation lap.

19 Mar

Verstappen then seems very comfortable in the RB19, but Lewis Hamilton does not have the same feeling in the Mercedes W14, saying after qualifying that it is a "miserable" feeling driving a car which he cannot "connect" with. From P7 on the grid, can the

19 Mar

And Verstappen of course will plan on soon getting involved in that conversation. He does not believe the win is possible, but he proved last year at Spa that it was from one spot higher on the grid! "I still need to be careful. It's a long championship

19 Mar

So, with Leclerc dropping down the order, it means that Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso joins Perez on the front row, with Mercedes' George Russell heading row two alongside Sainz. Aston Martin, Ferrari, Mercedes and even Alpine have the potential to give

19 Mar

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur has given the marching orders for the race. "I think him [Leclerc] coming back for the top five, and get Carlos [Sainz] onto the podium," said Vasseur.

19 Mar

Verstappen starts P15 then, and another driver looking to come back through the pack is Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who after qualifying P2, drops to P12 after he took a third Control Electronics of the season already.

19 Mar

Verstappen would drop out in Q2 after a driveshaft failure, and Red Bull have in response changed the rear suspension and both rear driveshafts on his RB19, as well as changing back to his Bahrain gearbox. Watch this space, Red Bull clearly have concerns.

19 Mar

So, we have a Red Bull on pole this evening, and it is Sergio Perez for the second year in succession here, but Saturday was far from a smooth day for the team, just ask Max Verstappen.

19 Mar

18 Mar

It is, but for Tsunoda, Albon, De Vries, Norris and Sargeant, that is qualifying over. Sargeant seems to have stopped out on track.

18 Mar

Esteban Ocon pops up to P7 and Gasly P11. Will that be enough for Alpine?

18 Mar

Frantic work at McLaren on Norris' car with two minutes to go, he will be eliminated if he does not get back out there. McLaren need a red flag.

18 Mar

Sargeant is facing the wrong way coming out of Turn 22, he gets that Williams back on track, but it did rather ruin Pierre Gasly's lap, who is down in the elimination zone.

18 Mar

This time Alonso keeps that Aston Martin on the road and his 1:29.4 is good enough for P4, six-tenths down on Verstappen.

18 Mar

Ferrari and Mercedes have decided now it is time to turn it up, but Verstappen is still over six-tenths up on Leclerc at the head of that pack.

18 Mar

Oh dear, Norris has hit the inside wall and caused some damage to the front-left of that McLaren. He is back in the pits to assess the damage. Alonso meanwhile is now at last out on the track, and has already had a spin down at Turn 2.

18 Mar

And there's Verstappen into the 1:28s, already half a second clear of Perez and a second clear of the rest. Right, he can probably go and put his feet up for a bit now, grab a coffee maybe.

18 Mar

Logan Sargeant has had his time deleted, somehow, for breaching track limits. Shame, he was in P1 as well. Leclerc delivers his first Q1 time, but it is not enough to beat Nico Hulkenberg in the Ferrari-powered Haas.

18 Mar

Both Ferraris are straight out there on the soft C4 tyre, while Nyck de Vries, understandably rusty having missed FP3 due to a power unit issue, has just gone for a spin on his first lap. No harm done, though the tyres may disagree.

18 Mar

And there's the green light, Q1 is underway. The slowest five drivers will drop out in this session.

18 Mar

The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is looking splendid as ever under the floodlights, track temperature is down to 32c.

18 Mar

As for the scrap to get out of Q1, Alfa Romeo, Haas, Williams and AlphaTauri right now look like the teams most likely to be in that scrap for survival, but at such a high-speed track where drivers have fewer areas to make the key difference, this one is

18 Mar

And such fierce competition is probably the last thing that Charles Leclerc wanted to see, the Ferrari driver carrying a 10-place grid penalty after taking a third Control Electronics of the season. A clean run through Q1, Q2 and Q3 is a must for his chan

18 Mar

Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, in P2 at the end of FP3, was almost four-tenths clear of the chasing pack, so he may well be safe on the front row, but after that, Alonso in P3 down to Carlos Sainz in P10 were separated by less than two-tent

18 Mar

But, even if Red Bull truly are gone and over the hill, the battle behind for 'best of the rest' looks fierce to say the least, with Aston Martin, Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine and McLaren potentially all involved.

18 Mar

So, who wants to step up and stop Red Bull this evening, anyone? Having topped every free practice session, Max Verstappen goes into qualifying as the overwhelming favourite for pole. He was a second clear of Fernando Alonso in P3 come the end of that fin

18 Mar

Sainz though has only one more attempt to even make the cut for Q3!

18 Mar

Well, this is huge, suddenly the likes of Alonso, Perez and Sainz all know pole is on here!

18 Mar

But no, Verstappen is out of qualifying! The driver who was pretty much certain for pole is out of qualifying.

18 Mar

There is pushing and shoving all over the place in that Red Bull garage as the mechanics rush to find a fix.

18 Mar

His father Jos Verstappen is fuming in the garage as Max returns to the pits for further inspection of that RB19.

18 Mar

Hang on! Verstappen is slow and says he has a problem.

18 Mar

Verstappen has backed off on his run with the used softs after a "big moment", so Alonso will survive at the top of the timings for a bit longer.

18 Mar

Alonso goes into the 1:28s, an improvement of half a second on Q1 for him.

18 Mar

Here we go, it's time for Q2 in Jeddah.

18 Mar

Well then, Perez is in prime position to avenge last season's Safety Car frustration here and claim that Jeddah win, but with how mighty Verstappen had been looking up until his issues, he still is very much a contender for victory from P15 on the grid. B

18 Mar

Russell will head up row two alongside Sainz, with Stroll, Ocon, Hamilton, Piastri, Gasly and Hulkenberg completing the top 10 on Sunday's grid.

18 Mar

Stroll perhaps pushed too soon, his pace dropped right off. It is back-to-back Jeddah poles then for Perez, who will be joined on the front row by Alonso. Leclerc will drop to P12 on the grid thanks to his penalty.

18 Mar

Hang on, Stroll has gone purple in Sector 1 as Alonso goes P2.

18 Mar

Alonso is right with Perez's time in that first sector and now a tenth down after Sector 2.

18 Mar

Sainz has had his push lap wrecked there by Russell, who to be fair could do very little to stay out of the way as he exited the pits.

18 Mar

Perez is going out for another push on fresh soft tyres.

18 Mar

It's a 1:29.7 from Piastri, who drops to P10 as Stroll gets a time on the board, good enough for P5.

18 Mar

A huge shout out to Piastri by the way who has made it into Q3 in the McLaren on just his second outing. He sets off on his first Q3 push lap in Formula 1.

18 Mar

Russell as it stands will join Perez on the front row, but he is back in the pits as Mercedes check the floor after a hefty ride over the kerbs.

18 Mar

There is, of course, still a Red Bull in the equation here, and Perez is onto provisional pole with a 1:28.265. Half a second clear of the pack, it feels like there is no catching him.

18 Mar

But it is Leclerc up in P1 after those first runs as Russell shoots up to P2, which would be pole as it stands!

18 Mar

And a 1:28.925 from Alonso is the early time to beat.

18 Mar

Right then, Q3 time, and Perez, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes are all in the hunt for pole now with Verstappen's untimely early exit.

17 Mar

That concludes our commentary of first practice at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Be sure to join us back here for FP2 in a couple of hours!

17 Mar

So that's that with Verstappen topping the FP1 times with a 1:29.617 ahead of Perez by 0.483s and Alonso in third.

17 Mar

The session concludes with a Virtual Safety Car test as the field line up on the grid for practice starts.

17 Mar

Not for the first time this session, replays show Hamilton running wide at Turn 22.

17 Mar

Chequered flag.

17 Mar

Hamilton (hards) evidently on a longer run in the Mercedes. He currently sits fifth, one place behind Russell whose earlier soft run still stands at 1.1s slower than Verstappen.

17 Mar

Woah! Very deep into Turn 22 for Stroll at the one corner where you really don't want a major wide moment. He lives to fight another day.

17 Mar

Black and white flag for Norris for failing to follow race director's instructions, potentially related to an earlier pit entry drama.

17 Mar

Another wide moment at Turn 22 on that lap for Verstappen, who kicked up a shower of sparks.

17 Mar

Perez improves but remains P3. So does Verstappen, who pushes the gap to Alonso back up to 0.525s.

17 Mar

"I don't know what's going on. I don't have any front end," reports Perez after a trip over the kerbs as Gasly moans about "rubbish" brakes on the Alpine. Tell us what you really think, Pierre...

17 Mar

Only personal bests on this occasion for Alonso, who reduces the gap to P1 to half a second exactly.

17 Mar

"Struggling for grip," Hamilton reports.

17 Mar

Attempts may have been made to make this circuit safer but that series of sweeps in the first sector still look potentially lethal. Stroll, on a hot lap, encounters two cars moving slowly on the racing line and skirts across the run-off.

17 Mar

Verstappen is finding the groove and extends his advantage over Alonso to 0.694s with another lap on softs.

17 Mar

Leclerc also has a wide moment through Turn 22 as Hamilton cuts the first chicane.

17 Mar

Verstappen complains of a "lot of understeer" at Turn 22 (the crazy high-speed left-right near the end of the lap).

17 Mar

Here we go again... Verstappen now takes top spot, beating Alonso's previous benchmark by 0.015s! The Alpines, still pretty in pink, currently holding fourth (Gasly) and fifth (Ocon) after runs on mediums.

17 Mar

With Perez back in the pits, two purple seconds for Alonso (S1 and S2) and a personal best returns him to P1 by 0.083s.

17 Mar

Verstappen finally joins the action and his first lap on soft puts him third.

17 Mar

Perez holds on to P1 as Alonso misses out by 0.177s.

17 Mar

Still no time from Verstappen, who missed his Thursday media duties as he recovered from a stomach bug, as Perez reclaims top spot. Alonso incoming...

17 Mar

The times keep dropping here as Alonso (softs) now goes top.

17 Mar

Russell - back in a blue helmet this weekend - is held up by Leclerc, who says Ferrari informed him too late of the Mercedes driver's presence.

17 Mar

Perez returns to top spot on softs with a 1:41.286 as Albon goes P2 - a second away - on hards.

17 Mar

Is that a little bit of bouncing we see while riding on board Hamilton's helmet cam? After a poor performance to start the season in Bahrain, that's all Mercedes need...

17 Mar

"He didn't get out of the way. That was dangerous," says Sainz after encountering a slow-moving Tsunoda late in the lap.

17 Mar

This opening practice session is held in the daylight of course, so not all that representative at this stage as drivers gradually reacquaint themselves with Jeddah's demands.

17 Mar

Perez is the only driver on softs at this stage and goes top despite a couple of wide moments sending up a shower of sparks.

17 Mar

Oops! Replays show Sergio Perez having to be pushed back from the pit wall by Red Bull mechanics as he misjudged how much space he had to play with when leaving the garage.

17 Mar

Green light!

17 Mar

A reminder that a number of tweaks have been made to the track (among the most... edgy on the F1 calendar) for this year to improve visibility through all those high-speed sweeps.

17 Mar

Verstappen was pushed hard by Charles Leclerc here in 2022 but a repeat looks highly unlikely with the Ferrari driver set to serve a 10-place grid penalty for already going over his PU-component limit after one race. Bodes well for the season...

17 Mar

Can you believe this is already the third time F1 has raced at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit? It feels like two minutes since Lewis Hamilton's hard-fought victory (and his most recent win) in December 2021. The runner-up in that inaugural race, Max Verstapp

17 Mar

That concludes our commentary of Friday practice at the Saudi Arabian GP. Meet you back here tomorrow for FP3 and qualifying!

17 Mar

At the end of that session it's Max Verstappen in P1 with Fernando Alonso 0.208s behind and Sergio Perez in third.

17 Mar

Perez is going slowly as Sainz creeps up on him, avoiding an accident by a matter of centimetres.

17 Mar

Chequered flag.

17 Mar

In the absence of anything interesting happening in the final seconds, has anyone known a trick-of-the-mind F1 livery quite like that Haas? Viewed from the front it's the same as last year; from anywhere else it's carbon fantastic.

17 Mar

"Is everything OK engine-wise?" asks Leclerc. Everything we hear from him right now seems to point to a basic lack of trust in Ferrari.

17 Mar

De Vries has a close call with a Mercedes exiting the pits.

17 Mar

Verstappen complains of long downshifts, which are particularly sub-optimal in the last corner. He didn't put it in such polite terms obviously...

17 Mar

Not much going on right now in truth. Those hoping for a Ferrari fightback here - at least until Leclerc's penalty was announced yesterday - will be alarmed to learn they sit ninth and 10th after the earlier qualifying sims.

17 Mar

"What happened?" asks a concerned Leclerc after hearing a strange noise from the engine following a practice start in the pit lane.

17 Mar

Well into the longer runs now. At risk of tempting the commentator's curse, it's amazing that we haven't seen an incident all day on a circuit like this.

17 Mar

Give an F1 driver an inch, he'll take a mile. Interesting to note how many are taking advantage of the new kerbs and run-off areas, introduced to improve visibility, to create a better angle into Jeddah's high-speed sweeps.

17 Mar

Piastri the latest to encounter a slow-moving car - two in fact - as Russell complains about another one into Turn 1. "We need to make changes," Russell tells Marcedes.

17 Mar

Alonso cuts the gap to 0.208 as Russell breaches the Red Bull-Aston Martin stranglehold by taking P4 from Stroll.

17 Mar

It's only practice but watching Verstappen in full flight on a hot lap here is an incredible experience. He goes P1 by 0.299s.

17 Mar

Double yellow flags put paid to that Verstappen lap as replays show Alonso meeting a slow-moving Sainz. Speed differential remains the greatest of all F1 hazards and is particularly prevalent here.

17 Mar

Perez takes P1 but Verstappen is on an outlap at this stage. Stand by...

17 Mar

Alonso's moved to softs now and puts in two purple sectors before being the latest to run wide at Turn 22.

17 Mar

Now we have Verstappen moaning about a problem with his headrest. "I'm laying down too much, I cannot feel the car," he says.

17 Mar

Leclerc complains on the radio after encountering the stray Haas of Hulkenberg on the racing line at Turn 13 (the banked left hairpin).

17 Mar

Perez goes P1 with another medium lap but is instantly overcome by Verstappen - already in full 2021 qualifying mode (if you know, you know) - who goes 0.370s faster.

17 Mar

Albon's rear wing flaps Red Bull-style with the DRS open as he goes P8.

17 Mar

Most drivers on mediums for these first runs. Verstappen goes top but is pipped to P1 by Alonso by 0.189s with Stroll in third.

17 Mar

Turn 22 (fast left-right) proved a challenge for most drivers in FP1 and Tsunoda is the first to his trouble here, misjudging his turn-in and clobbering the inside barrier. He survives.

17 Mar

Bottas with a big ol' lockup into Turn 1 and cuts the chicane.

17 Mar

Some drivers heading straight out on track, others stopping at the end of the pit lane for a practice start.

17 Mar

It's lights out and away we... oh no, that's Sunday's line isn't it? Ahem. Green light.

17 Mar

In case you missed it, Max Verstappen topped FP1 by 0.483s from Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez. Fernando Alonso was third in a repeat of the Bahrain Grand Prix podium.

18 Mar

That concludes our commentary of the third practice session at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Join us back here in a couple of hours for qualifying!

18 Mar

So, Max Verstappen completes a clean sweep of practice sessions in Jeddah, topping FP3 by six tenths over Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez. The gap to third-placed Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin? Almost a full second. Gulp.

18 Mar

The Ferraris go again and Leclerc jumps to sixth, albeit 1.1s off P1. Sainz stays P10.

18 Mar

Chequered flag.

18 Mar

Only P10 for Sainz and 11th for Leclerc, who ran wide and clattered the kerb through Turn 22. Are Ferrari running in detuned mode in light of their reliability issues, or just a bit slow around here?

18 Mar

Or not, as the case may be, as Leclerc coasts through another lap. A quick lap is coming up, we promise...

18 Mar

Time to see what the Ferraris, currently 17th and 18th after completing their earlier quick runs on medium tyres, can do on softs...

18 Mar

Now the stewards reach a verdict of no further action on the Norris/Verstappen near miss. That was quick, huh?

18 Mar

That incident has been noted by Race Control as Verstappen improves by a tenth. Norris and Piastri currently sitting sixth and seventh for McLaren.

18 Mar

Norris has to back out of a lap after almost piling into the back of Verstappen in the first-sector sweepers. Max later pulls alongside to offer his apologies before berating the team for being slow to inform him.

18 Mar

Verstappen goes fastest by 0.371s! Meanwhile, Bottas moans about an Aston Martin exiting the pits.

18 Mar

Only personal bests for Alonso, who has a huge snap of oversteer at the final corner. He goes third. Now here comes Max with two purple sectors...

18 Mar

Perez is back on softs and improves on his previous time. Here comes Alonso on the same compound...

18 Mar

Woah! Ocon drops a wheel on the kerb and nearly loses it at the corner where Mick Schumacher destroyed a Haas chassis in qualifying last year.

18 Mar

We're still yet to see De Vries in this session and it has now been confirmed his AlphaTauri is undergoing a precautionary power unit change. Not great for the Jeddah rookie and this latest development is unlikely to improve Franz Tost's mood...

18 Mar

Isn't it amazing how the ambience of some F1 circuits completely transforms at night? During the day the Jeddah Corniche looks no prettier than, say, the old Valencia track.

18 Mar

After an inconclusive showing in Bahrain, Alpine had a productive Friday in Jeddah and Gasly and Ocon (both on softs) currently sit P3 and P4 respectively. The Aston Martins are yet to try the red tyres though...

18 Mar

Turn 22 proved troublesome for pretty much every driver yesterday and replays show Piastri having a hairy moment entering the fearsomely quick left-right flick.

18 Mar

Hamilton complains of traffic after meeting a couple of slow-moving cars in the fast sweeps of Sector 2.

18 Mar

Perez (softs) goes faster than Verstappen's hard-tyred benchmark by 0.329s. The tyre delta between those compounds around here is said to be around seven tenths. Hmm.

18 Mar

"I'm getting a lot of de-rating," Sainz reports.

18 Mar

Gasly retakes top spot momentarily before Verstappen goes P1 on hards. Perez is only just coming out for his out lap while De Vries is still in the pits and without a time on the board.

18 Mar

Both Mercedes on softs at this stage as Russell goes P1 and Hamilton slots into P2. Verstappen, behind the soft-shod Gasly in fourth, is currently on hards.

18 Mar

At last! Hulkenberg sets the first timed lap of the session and is quickly toppled by Gasly as Ocon goes P2.

18 Mar

The track falls quiet once more but it won't be for long as more drivers get strapped in. We did warn you that this session isn't particularly relevant...

18 Mar

Stroll is joined on track by Alonso, with both Aston Martins pulling in after an installation lap for a spot of pit stop practice.

18 Mar

No great rush from the pit lane this afternoon but Lance Stroll is the first to pierce the silence and head out on track.

18 Mar

Green light.

18 Mar

Like FP1 yesterday, this session will be held in daylight so not hugely representative ahead of qualifying tonight. A quick car is a quick car though, right?

18 Mar

Only two tenths separated Verstappen and Alonso in FP2, but the Red Bulls did seem to have a clear and consistent straight-line advantage over Aston Martin in the potential battle for pole position later.

18 Mar

In case you missed it, Max Verstappen led both practice sessions on Friday with Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin splitting the Red Bulls in FP2.
