And we're into the 11s! Verstappen just posted a 1:11.908! This is insane! Can he go even quicker?

27 May 16:53

Hamilton again leaves it to the last moments to post a time. It was touch and go, but he is into Q3. Leclerc went second quickest, but that time Verstappen posted is just too out of reach at the moment.

27 May 17:00

Q3 is underway. Who will be on pole at the end of the next 12 minutes?

27 May 17:03

Alonso is on provisional pole! He blasts to the top with an 1:11.706! This is the quickest lap of the entire weekend.

27 May 17:05

The top 4 is currently Alonso, Sainz, Leclerc and Verstappen. But let's keep an eye on the timesheets, because everyone will go for another run.

27 May 17:08

What?! Esteban Ocon is provisional pole!

27 May 17:13

Just... WOW! What a qualifying session! It was edge-of-the-seat action, but Verstappen took pole position at the very end. Alonso will start second, with home hero Leclerc in third.

Simply superb!

27 May 17:23

Max Verstappen claimed pole for the Monaco Grand Prix with Fernando Alonso keeping the Red Bull world champion company on the front row after qualifying on Saturday.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will start Sunday's race on the second row alongside the Alpine of Esteban Ocon.

"You have to go all out and risk it all," said Verstappen.

"I knew I was behind, I'm very happy to be on pole for the first time here."

The session was red-flagged when Sergio Perez smashed his Red Bull into a wall leaving last year's winner at the rear of the grid. With overtaking at a premium on the narrow twisting streets of the Principality Perez's misfortune could prove costly for his title challenge with the Mexican 14 points adrift of Verstappen going into this sixth race of the season.

Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari posted the fifth fastest time to occupy the third row with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Ocon's Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, George Russell of Mercedes, Alpha Tauri's Yuki Tsunoda and McLaren's Lando Norris completed the top 10.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix! This promises to be an exciting race as two of the sport's all-time greats start from the front row.

Ferrari's Leclerc stripped of third place in Monaco qualifying for blocking Norris.

It wasn't intentional and the race stewards acknowledge it as such, but a penalty for an impediment must be applied.

One of the big talking points going into the race is who will come out in first heading into Turn 1 when the lights go out. It's a short run, but Turn 1 is not afraid to take victims and turn the race on its head.

So we have to wonder: Will Alonso make the most of his chances, or can Verstappen get a decent start off the line - something which has been amiss throughout 2023.

A charging Spaniard and a flying Dutchman: What to expect in the Monaco GP

There are plenty of scenarios to take note of, including Verstappen vs Alonso, Ferrari up against the ropes, and Hamilton driving a car that's a "son of a gun."

28 May 14:57

We are 3 minutes away from the start of the most technical race on the F1 calendar!

28 May 15:01

The formation lap is underway, and then it's time to go racing. This is going to be special!

28 May 15:06

Lap 1/78: Verstappen keeps the lead over Alonso, with Ocon and Sainz tucked in behind them. Interestingly, Alonso is on the Hard tyre versus Alonso's Medium.

The advantage of the Hards is that drivers can go deep into the race, but it leaves you at a performance disadvantage at the start of the race.

28 May 15:10

Lap 5/78: Verstappen's lead over Alonso is two seconds. If he manages this, it could bode well come the end of the race.

Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg received a five-second penalty for a pitlane infringement.

28 May 15:16

Lap 10/15: Verstappen is still in front, but Alonso is keeping him honest. The gap increased to 3 seconds. Ocon is third, but 12 seconds off the pace, with a train forming behind him.

28 May 15:19

Sainz goes into the back of Ocon! Both drivers are still out on track and going strong. Ferrari is ready with a new front wing, but told Sainz to stay out.

28 May 15:31

Lap 22/78: Verstappen's lead over Alonso is 10 seconds, and he is pulling away at the front. With a 24-sec gap to third-place Ocon, Verstappen can pit now and still rejoin in second place behind Alonso.

28 May 15:41

Lap 30/78: Drivers, including Verstappen and Alonso, are complaining about graining. Further back, the two Williams' of Albon and Sargeant are bringing up the rear.

28 May 15:43

Verstappen is about to lap teammate Perez, who is down in 16th place. The gap between the two drivers is a mammoth 76 seconds.

28 May 15:57

Lap 41/78: Max Verstappen is driving with an incredible pace and is clearing back markers at a wild pace. He is still leading the race, with the gap over Alonso a comfortable 9 seconds.

28 May 16:07

Lap 50/78: The rain is inching closer to the track, with some reports saying that it's only a few km away from the track.

This possibility of rain is letting teams hold out on pitting their drivers. However, this approach will favour Alonso on the Hards more than Verstappen on the Medium.

28 May 16:11

IT'S RAINING!

28 May 16:15

This is interesting. Alonso opted for the Medium tyre and not the Intermediates! Red Bull is going for the Intermediates, too!

28 May 16:21

Lap 58/78: Magnussen is on the Hard tyre - a complete mistake! He crashed at the end of the lap, but manages to make it into the pits.

28 May 16:40

Lap 70/78: It's been a wild couple of laps, but Verstappen is still out in front, with Alonso more than 24 seconds behind. All the drivers are treading carefully as they make their way around the 3.3km circuit.

28 May 16:46

Lap 78/78: Perez and Red Bull gambled with the strategy again, coming in for a fresh set of the Intermediate tyre. In front, Alonso is 26 seconds behind Verstappen.

28 May 16:54

Max Verstappen won an action-packed Monaco Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver held the lead into  Turn 1 when the action for underway and never looked back.

With 30 laps remaining, drivers began reporting spots of rain, but it soon turned into a wet race. Fernando Alonso finished second for Aston Martin, with Esteban Ocon in third place for Alpine.

Top 10:

1. Max Verstappen, Red Bull

2. Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin

3. Esteban Ocon, Alpine

4. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

5. George Russell, Mercedes

6. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari

7. Pierre Gasly, Alpine

8. Carlos Sainz, Ferrari

9. Lando Norris, McLaren

10. Oscar Piastri, McLaren

Verstappen leads from start to finish to win Monaco GP

Max Verstappen led all the way from pole position to the chequered flag to win the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday and increase his lead in the Formula 1 driver standings.

Despite brushes with the track walls, the Dutch Red Bull driver finished comfortably ahead of Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso in an Aston Martin with Frenchman Esteban Ocon third for Alpine."Clipped the walls a few times," said Verstappen. "It was super-difficult out there, but that's Monaco.

"Super nice to win it and super nice to win it the way we did today with the weather everything and stay calm and bring it home."

Verstappen's closest challenger in the standings, teammate Sergio Perez started at the back of the grid after crashing in qualifying and finished outside the points.

In a race enlivened by frequent contact between cars and also a brief rain shower, the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, despite a five-second penalty, were fourth and fifth, with Monaco native Charles Leclerc sixth for Ferrari.

"Max drove super well," said Alonso, who started on the front row. "We didn't have any chance."

28 May

Well, it may have been another case of Verstappen dominance, but when you have an action-packed race like that in Monaco, with the weather making its mark, the word 'boring' certainly does not come into play. Barcelona has a hard act to follow then, see y

28 May

Hamilton and Russell take care of P4 and P5, with Leclerc, Gasly, Sainz, Norris and Piastri completing the top 10.

28 May

Alonso comes home some 28 seconds behind in P2, his best result yet with Aston Martin, while Ocon completes the podium, his and Alpine's first of 2023.

28 May

What a performance. Verstappen dominates and wins the Monaco Grand Prix!

28 May

Russell says the "car doesn't feel right" ever since that Perez hit, but he is over 11 seconds clear of Leclerc, so even with his penalty, P5 is not under threat.

28 May

And Magnussen is indeed out of the car and this race.

28 May

Magnussen has boxed his Haas car, another one that has taken a battering today, he may be about to join Stroll in retirement.

28 May

A dry line is now forming on the circuit, but nobody surely will risk slick tyres now with five laps to go.

28 May

And Perez is in to ditch those full wets, onto inters he goes and he drops a spot to P17.

28 May

Hulkenberg is now right on the back of Perez as Verstappen laps his team-mate for the second time today...ouch.

28 May

Another smack of the wall for Verstappen, but no damage done. He's just keeping things interesting for us all.

28 May

Verstappen gives a clear "no" when asked if he sees this track becoming anything other than inters before the end of the race.

28 May

It looks like retirement is looming for Tsunoda, he is in all sorts of trouble with the brakes.

28 May

Tsunoda seems to have issues with the brakes, he is into the run-off at Mirabeau and has to reverse out. He drops to P13, a place behind team-mate De Vries now.

28 May

And Tsunoda could not pick up the pace enough, Norris pulls a lovely move around the outside into Sainte Devote, up to P9 he goes.

28 May

11 laps to go, and Ocon is on for a podium finish. Gasly in the other Alpine meanwhile has been shown the black and white warning flag.

28 May

"I know but this brake sucks! What a reply from Tsunoda when AlphaTauri ask him to find time, especially under braking, with Norris harrying him for P9.

28 May

It is still soaking wet around the middle of the track, but the rain is now easing off.

28 May

A 10-second time penalty for Hulkenberg for serving his penalty incorrectly.

28 May

Russell has a plan, he wants Hamilton to let him through, to protect him against Leclerc, and then he will not go more than five seconds clear of Hamilton so he gets the place back when his penalty is applied. Mercedes are not too keen on that one. Nice t

28 May

Stroll is the first retiree, remarkably, of the race. That Aston Martin has finally given up after the various bumps.

28 May

Verstappen is a master of these wet conditions and is putting time on Alonso, but it is so slippery, that RB19 is twitching all over the place.

28 May

Magnussen is into the escape road at Sainte Devote on those full wets. He manages to reverse out. We then saw that Stroll and Russell were in the escape road at Mirabeau, and Russell got his penalty for reversing out and hitting Perez, who then clonked th

28 May

A five-second penalty for Russell for that unsafe rejoin.

28 May

Magnussen has been shown the black and white flag for track limits, just to rub it in, but Alonso has too. Perez is in for full wets. Remember, these are the new full wets which do not require a tyre blanket, this the first chance teams will have to try t

28 May

And into the wall goes Magnussen at Rascasse, but he reverses out and takes to the pit lane. Haas mechanics are scrambling for a new front wing.

28 May

Magnussen has to give this up, Hulkenberg just made up five seconds and passed his team-mate within two corners. Now they are calling him in to go to the other extreme of full wets. Russell and Perez have been noted for unsafely rejoining the track.

28 May

Stroll has hit the wall at the hairpin even on the inters, it is so slippery, he has lost the front wing and carried on.

28 May

Hamilton and Russell have jumped the Ferraris, P4 and P5 now, Magnussen is still trying to hang on with slicks! Impossible surely in this weather?

28 May

Verstappen has crawled back to the pits for inters, and Alonso is in too for inters, if only he had fitted them at his last stop, then he would be leading this race. Ferrari are double-stacking their drivers.

28 May

Now it is full wets at the hairpin, Sainz has spun off and lost places.

28 May

Russell and Ocon have pitted for inters, the rain is now covering much of the track. Verstappen has hit the wall at Portier but carries on.

28 May

This is so tricky for the drivers, the track is absolutely intermediate tyres around the hairpin and Mirabeau, but slicks everywhere else. Alonso has pitted but for fresh slick tyres.

28 May

Down at Mirabeau is where the rain is heaviest, they are crawling around there. Verstappen on warn tyres is especially vulnerable. Ocon fends off Sainz at the Nouvelle chicane.

28 May

There are cars all over the place, can everyone keep it out of the wall?

28 May

The rain is here and it is getting heavy, the track is like an ice rink!

28 May

In comes Norris for the hard tyres, all while Russell claims it is "raining more and more".

28 May

"Spitting in Turn 3," Russell reports. Certainly not yet heavy enough to impact strategy.

28 May

Magnussen now is getting to know the barriers down at Sainte Devote as he continues to be pursued by Stroll. Red Bull are warning Verstappen that there may be drops of rain between Turn 6 and Turn 8.

28 May

Piastri kissed the barrier at the Swimming Pool chicane to perfection there with his McLaren, though at the same time so close to disaster. Gasly has pitted and comes out behind Leclerc. Red Bull meanwhile are "monitoring pockets of rain a few kilometres

28 May

In comes Leclerc for new mediums, he comes back out behind Hamilton.

28 May

"Not sure how much longer I can keep this up for." Verstappen is squeezing out every bit of performance left in those medium tyres.

28 May

Russell says Gasly is starting to back him up, the Mercedes driver wanting what is currently P4 from the Alpine driver.

28 May

Relying on the naked eye rather than the radars, there is a big black cloud, clearly dumping rain, moving closer from the hills towards the track.

28 May

The Magnussen-Stroll contact at Anthony Noghes has been noted.

28 May

"Potential risk of rain with 20 laps to go," Williams tell Albon. This rain so far has been elusive. Stroll meanwhile has given Magnussen a whack to further wound his Aston Martin.

28 May

Medium tyres for Perez and a front wing change, his awful weekend gets worse. The stewards say no further action as he gave the place back to Stroll. Well, kind of, not by choice and not without leaving the Aston Martin damaged. Sainz is furious meanwhile

28 May

Perez and Stroll both have front wing damage. Perez gives Magnussen a whack at the Nouvelle Chicane, with Stroll then hitting and passing Perez in the Red Bull.

28 May

That Stroll-Perez incident has been noted, while the overcut has not worked for Sainz, he is back behind Ocon.

28 May

Stroll opens the door for Verstappen to lap him at the Nouvelle Chicane, and Perez takes the chance to dive down the outside, cut the chicane and take the position. He says Stroll forced him off, but that excuse may not stack up with the stewards.

28 May

A slow stop there for Ocon, a disaster for Alpine.

28 May

Leclerc has been told to give it everything as Hamilton attempts to stay ahead with the undercut.

28 May

Hamilton is in for the hard tyres, while Verstappen's lead over Alonso is now down to seven seconds.

28 May

Stroll so nearly lost his Aston Martin heading into Anthony Noghes, well held!

28 May

Alonso has taken two seconds out of Verstappen as he battles this traffic.

28 May

"Risk of rain towards the end of the race," Red Bull tell Perez. This makes strategy tricky then, as the teams will not want to lose track position if it is then going to rain.

28 May

Verstappen has come across that big lower midfield pack, this is costing him a lot of time.

28 May

The front-left is starting to give Verstappen some bother out front.

28 May

Again Ferrari call Sainz in, only to tell him to then stay out.

28 May

McLaren are telling Norris "class 1" rain could be here as soon as Lap 35.

28 May

Ferrari tell Sainz there is a rain threat in 45 minutes, though the risk is reducing.

28 May

Alonso and Sainz are both reporting rear-left graining on the hard tyre.

28 May

Magnussen was surely on the brink there of a black and white flag with his weaving towards Tabac to keep Stroll behind.

28 May

Verstappen is starting to stretch his legs out front, the gap to Alonso is now over 11 seconds. Worth noting though that Verstappen is on the medium tyre, and Alonso on the hard.

28 May

The pain is over for Sargeant as he boxes for the hard rubber.

28 May

The Ferrari crew were out to receive Sainz, but not for the first time this race, they head back into the garage with no pit stop completed.

28 May

Another move, Hulkenberg shows how you get it done at the Nouvelle Chicane with a pass on Sargeant.

28 May

Bottas is also on the move at the expense of a Williams, passing Albon at the hairpin, who pitted at the end of that lap for the hard tyres.

28 May

Sargeant is really under pressure now, losing places to Stroll and then Perez at the final two turns.

28 May

Lovely move there from Magnussen who takes Sargeant down the inside at Mirabeau.

28 May

Sainz has been shown the black and white flag for causing that collision, so it is merely a warning for driving standards at this stage.

28 May

Sargeant in P15 has created quite the train of cars behind, featuring Stroll and Perez in the middle of all that.

28 May

Hamilton was actually lucky not to get a puncture, he drove straight over that front-wing endplate which came off Sainz's Ferrari.

28 May

Sainz is losing time, Hamilton in the Mercedes is now on his tail, who has dragged Sainz's team-mate Leclerc along with him.

28 May

That Sainz and Ocon incident has been noted, while Alonso is convinced he has a rear-right puncture. Aston Martin say all is fine.

28 May

For two laps Ferrari were telling Sainz that they were checking the damage, and they seem happy for him to carry on, the planned replacement front wing and nose is going back on its stand.

28 May

The Ferrari crew were waiting for him, but Sainz stayed out. He may get the black and orange flag to force him to pit.

28 May

Well he tried...and he has damaged his front wing going for the move into the Nouvelle Chicane.

28 May

Ocon is now under serious pressure from Sainz in the Ferrari, but can he make the pass?

28 May

Ocon is already 10 seconds behind Verstappen, so this is turning into an intriguing straight fight between Verstappen and Alonso. Verstappen has now passed the 2000 laps lead mark in Formula 1.

28 May

No further investigation for Russell over that alleged incorrect starting position. He will not be the third driver to fall foul of that in F1 2023.

28 May

Verstappen has built his buffer over Alonso now to 2.5 seconds.

28 May

Perez has set a new fastest lap of the race, showing the value of clear air. He is lapping a second-and-a-half faster than Red Bull team-mate Verstappen in the lead, who is clearly managing the tyres in this early stage.

28 May

And it is a five-second time penalty for Hulkenberg.

28 May

Stroll had a few skirmishes on that opening lap, hitting the outside wall at the hairpin, before going for a gap down the inside of Albon which was always going to close. The stewards are now investigating the Hulkenberg/Sargeant incident.

28 May

Russell has been noted for an incorrect starting position, that one usually spells a penalty.

28 May

The stewards may take a look at Hulkenberg and Sargeant, the pair having made contact at Mirabeau on that opening lap.

28 May

Hulkenberg is up four places on that opening lap, who says you can't overtake in Monaco? Stroll has a puncture and has pitted, Perez did too to switch to the hard rubber, he is up to P18 and will not need to pit again if it stays dry.

28 May

It is chaos at the hairpin, but somehow they all escape that wheel-banging without damage, Stroll is losing positions, he may not have been so lucky it seems.

28 May

Lights out! Verstappen covers Alonso and keeps the lead.

28 May

Away they go for the formation lap. There is rain around the area, but it has not reached the circuit yet.

28 May

A nice mix of tyres for the start. Softs: Zhou Mediums: Verstappen, Ocon, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Norris, De Vries, Albon, Sargeant, Hulkenberg, Perez Hards: Alonso, Sainz, Leclerc, Gasly, Russell, Piastri, Stroll, Bottas, Magnussen

28 May

Not the ideal start for Williams, they have been fined 100 Euros after Albon was caught speeding in the pit lane on his way to the grid.

28 May

Less than 10 minutes now until the formation lap begins, so you have just enough time to get your second screen sorted by joining On Track GP for their LIVE Monaco Grand Prix watchalong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyBzQVcwwlo.

28 May

The bottom half of the grid is led by Oscar Piastri ahead of Nyck de Vries, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Valtteri Bottas, Logan Sargeant, Kevin Magnussen, Nico Hulkenberg and Zhou Guanyu with Perez bringing up the rear.

28 May

Row two belongs to Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc lining up behind them. Leclerc qualified third fastest but was hit with a three-place grid penalty for impeding Lando Norris in qualifying. Pierre Gasly, George Russe

28 May

Verstappen has Fernando Alonso alongside him on the front row with today's race the Aston Martin driver's best opportunity to secure a first win for the season. If he did, it would be his 33rd over but his first in a decade.

28 May

Today's race will see one Red Bull starting on one end of the grid with Max Verstappen on pole, while his team-mate Sergio Perez is all the way back in 20th place after crashing in qualifying. Red Bull changed several parts of his car including his front

28 May

For the second year running Formula 1 could be on track for a wet Monaco Grand Prix with thunderstorms forecast for this afternoon's race. For now, though, it's dry although cloud cover is building over the Principality.

28 May

Good afternoon and welcome to Monte Carlo, the home of the Monaco Grand Prix.

27 May

Sainz and Hamilton pull off the great escape. Sargeant, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Zhou and Perez drop out in Q1. Verstappen P1 from Tsunoda and Albon.

27 May

Leclerc is not too happy with Sainz who he felt rather got in the way at the pit entry, and if Sainz is not careful, he will not make it into Q2, the same true for Hamilton who has one more attempt left after getting the Nouvelle Chicane all wrong.

27 May

Tsunoda has just put that AlphaTauri into P1, Verstappen has escaped a brush of the wall out of Anthony Noghes.

27 May

Those soft C5 tyres could not hang on for another lap for Hamilton, he is P12 and will need a fresh set.

27 May

Less than half a second covers the top 10 with five minutes to go.

27 May

The track is really ramping up, we have a top six of Alonso, Ocon, Gasly, Verstappen, Tsunoda and De Vries!

27 May

The times are tumbling, Perez may find himself starting P20 and last.

27 May

Down at Ferrari, it seems like Leclerc had the choice to be ahead of Sainz in the pit-lane, but the Spaniard got out ahead. Leclerc is happy to let that one slide.

27 May

Right then, we are back underway.

27 May

Perez's stricken Red Bull has been removed, so barrier repairs are taking place.

27 May

That is it for last year's Monaco winner, this could be a hugely damaging weekend for Perez's title hopes, the best grid slot he can now hope for is P15. He simply slid into the barrier at Sainte Devote.

27 May

Perez has spun just after the pit exit, as Norris and Piastri go P1 and P2 for McLaren. Red flag, Perez has damage.

27 May

Alonso and Stroll get the jump on Leclerc, slotting in behind Sergio Perez. The top four is covered by less than 0.15s at this very early stage.

27 May

The times are being pumped in already, it is an early P1 for Verstappen, Leclerc has three-tenths to find.

27 May

Daniel Ricciardo is watching on from one of many balconies overlooking this iconic track. Will it get the adrenaline flowing to chase a return to the Monaco track for next year?

27 May

A great job from Haas who have Kevin Magnussen's car ready to go following a hydraulic failure earlier, while Mercedes have also put in the work to get Hamilton out there.

27 May

Here we go, Q1 is underway. We will lose the slowest five drivers after this session.

27 May

Something to watch out for this afternoon is those soft tyres and how they hang on. The track temperature is up to 49c, and during the final hour of practice, Williams team boss James Vowles claimed that the soft C5 compound is unusually giving only one l

27 May

It is nearly qualifying time here in Monaco, can Charles Leclerc make it a hat-trick of poles on home soil? Before that though the action starts with Q1, and this one will be crazy tight to make the cut.

27 May

Their fellow Brit Lando Norris is one to watch out for in that Mercedes-powered McLaren. He took care of the P5 slot for both FP2 and FP3.

27 May

Mercedes appear to be on the back foot, Lewis Hamilton having put the upgraded W14 in the wall late in FP3, while team-mate George Russell managed only P11.

27 May

Max Verstappen understandably goes into this one as favourite for pole, but Aston Martin are a very real lurking threat. Lance Stroll was 0.166s down on the Championship leader come the end of FP3, while Fernando Alonso was not able to show his true capab

27 May

27 May

Piastri, De Vries, Albon and Bottas join Stroll in elimination, Norris makes the cut then and McLaren are frantically working on repairs.

27 May

Potential trouble for Stroll, the stewards have noted him for potentially failing to stop at the weighbridge. But definite trouble in the fact that he has pitted, so he is out of qualifying as well.

27 May

Norris before that clipped the inside wall at the Nouvelle Chicane, and it looks like that was enough to damage the suspension, that will be the end of his session.

27 May

Norris has hit the wall at Tabac. He has carried on back to the pits, and now McLaren must quickly assess that damage.

27 May

That's better for Russell, up to P3 he goes, within a quarter of a second of Verstappen, but for Hamilton...it is only P10. He is in a battle here to make Q3. "I feel like there is something wrong with my right-rear suspension," he says.

27 May

Ocon gave the wall at Sainte Devote a good whack with the rear-left, but his Alpine escaped any damage from that one.

27 May

Alonso is keeping Verstappen honest, narrowing the deficit briefly, but Verstappen has moved into the 1:11s to create a two-tenth buffer.

27 May

It looks like Mercedes will need to throw a fresh set of tyres on their cars, Hamilton is P9 and Russell P11 only, both very much at risk of elimination.

27 May

Verstappen is setting the pace once more as the opening laps come in, Gasly and Alonso the only drivers within two-tenths of him, that was a cracking effort from Gasly.

27 May

The light goes green for Q2, who will make that top-10 shootout for pole?

Well, it may normally be the case that Saturday features the best of the Monaco action, but with a mixed-up top 10 like that, and so little between the drivers, race day Sunday could well be a classic. There is also the threat of rain to factor in! Make s

27 May

Sainz, Hamilton, Gasly, Russell, Tsunoda and Norris complete the top 10.

27 May

He may have "hit the wall pretty hard", but for Verstappen it does not matter, he is a Monaco polesitter, what a qualifying that was! Alonso will join the Red Bull driver on the front row, with Leclerc heading row two alongside Ocon after a fantastic effo

27 May

No, it goes on, Verstappen goes purple in the final sector and clinches pole position in Monaco, breaking hearts down at Aston Martin.

27 May

Verstappen is down on Alonso, is this it, is Alonso's wait over?

27 May

And Alonso is back up to provisional pole, only two-hundredths between him and Leclerc. All eyes on Verstappen!

27 May

Leclerc and Alonso are both threatening that P1 time.

27 May

Verstappen understandably has taken on a new set of soft tyres in his bid to respond.

27 May

Could Alpine be on for their first pole position courtesy of Ocon?

27 May

Hang on, Ocon provisional pole!

27 May

Verstappen is back onto provisional pole, boosted by a purple final sector. Can Alonso respond? He is only 0.052s behind.

27 May

It is an all-Spanish front row as it stands with Sainz in P2, Leclerc P3 and Russell P4. Bravo McLaren who are sending Norris out now, what an effort to get that MCL60 repaired!

27 May

No, it will not be enough, Alonso goes onto provisional pole. He has not claimed that honour since Germany 2012.

27 May

A 1:12.1 from Verstappen, slower than his best Q2 effort and likely not enough for pole.

27 May

Verstappen sets off on his first pole attempt.

27 May

Q3 is now underway, who will claim that all-important pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix?

27 May

Q3 starts in one minute, McLaren are still hard at work, will they get Norris out before the clock hits zero?

26 May

That concludes our live commentary of FP1 in Monaco. Join us back here for the second session a little later!

26 May

At the end of that, Carlos Sainz tops FP1 for Ferrari with a benchmark time of 1:13.372. Fernando Alonso is second and 0.338s behind, with Lewis Hamilton third.

26 May

Albon lost the rear mid-corner, slapped the left-rear rear against the wall and knocked the left-front off for good measure too. He reports over the radio that he banged his knees but is OK. A costly one for Williams.

26 May

Session will not resume.

26 May

Red flag! Albon stopped with a dislodged left-rear at St Devote.

26 May

Leclerc on one of those breathtaking Leclerc laps, survives a lockup into the chicane before catching a slide in the second part of the Swimming Pool.

26 May

"These guys are incredible! Incredible!" Alonso complains over the radio after meeting a slow-moving Perez at Massenet.

26 May

As Verstappen cuts the track at the Swimming Pool to ruin a lap, the top three with less than 10 minutes to go reads Ferrari (Sainz), Aston Martin (Alonso) and Mercedes (Hamilton). Can Red Bull be got at this weekend?

26 May

Verstappen and Hamilton reassume their rivalry with a fight over track position as Magnussen becomes the first driver this weekend to go straight on at St Devote.

26 May

Alonso put in a lap just 0.064s adrift of Hamilton before the Hulkenberg red flag. His latest effort put him top by 0.128s.

26 May

Green light with just under 20 minutes to go.

26 May

Replays confirm he did indeed... red flag for debris at the scene of the crime.

26 May

Left-rear puncture for Hulkenberg, who's moving slowly back to the pits after facing the wrong way at the chicane. Did he clip the inside barrier?

26 May

"I can't really get my tyres working. I don't have the confidence," reports Russell, who isn't loving the weak rear end on the Mercedes.

26 May

Verstappen is asked for an update on the Red Bull balance. "A little bit better on the rear" but still not great over the bumps is the gist of it.

26 May

Russell goes again but can only make it up to P11 this time, 1.5s off the pace.

26 May

Hamilton (mediums) goes P1 having gone purple in sectors 1 and 3. Russell, meanwhile, only goes P15. "Brakes don't feel they're decelerating very well," he reports.

26 May

Sargeant returns to the pits having crawled all the way back from the tunnel. "It feels like the wheel is not on properly," he says.

26 May

Replays show Bottas taking avoiding action after encountering a slow-moving Red Bull on entry to Rascasse.

26 May

Stroll touches the wall on the exit of the final corner but lives to fight another day. Sainz leading Leclerc by just over a tenth currently with Alonso third.

26 May

Verstappen now warning Red Bull he is going to "shunt" if he doesn't come in, Russell is already back in the pits making suspension adjustments.

26 May

Norris is back in the pits and complaining about the McLaren's balance. He sits sixth for now, having brushed the Swimming Pool barrier to perfection on his previous lap.

26 May

Verstappen still complaining of bottoming as Leclerc reinforces Ferrari's encouraging start to this session to lead a 1-2 as president John Elkann, linked with a big-money move for a certain seven-time World Champion this week, watches on from the garage.

26 May

"The rears are too hot," Hamilton reports after briefly putting the new-look Mercedes P2.

26 May

Sainz slots into P2 behind Leclerc and ahead of Norris, the only three drivers on mediums at this stage.

26 May

"The car in high-speed places is unbelievable difficult to drive," reports Verstappen. Replays show Sainz kissing the inside barrier at the Swimming Pool section, made famous by team-mate Leclerc in 2021.

26 May

Verstappen complains of bottoming over the radio as Leclerc goes second. Norris the early leader.

26 May

Perez encounters heavy traffic as he gets to the end of his first lap of the day, as replays show Verstappen having trouble with the clutch pulling out of the garage.

26 May

Green light.

26 May

FP1 will bring our first glimpse of the new and (possibly) improved Mercedes W14 on track. Will a major upgrade (and sidepods!) be enough to put Lewis Hamilton and George Russell back in the hunt for wins?

26 May

Been a while, hasn't it? Almost three weeks since our last taste of F1 action in Miami. A reminder that Max Verstappen heads into this weekend with a 14-point lead over Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez in the standings.

26 May

26 May

That concludes our commentary of FP2 in Monte Carlo. Meet us back here tomorrow for FP3 and qualifying, yeah?

26 May

So, Max Verstappen tops the second practice session in Monaco with Ferrari pair Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both very close to the Red Bull driver in second and third.

26 May

Tsunoda will be investigated for speeding in the pit lane after the session.

26 May

Chequered flag.

26 May

McLaren mechanics are having a good look at Norris's engine. May be a bold call but with less than five minutes to go that's probably the end of his session...

26 May

Albon completes his first lap of the session as Norris, currently fifth, is told to abort his run and pits.

26 May

Green light with just over 10 minutes to go.

26 May

If you correctly guessed 'hit the inside wall and broke the steering arm', 10 points to you! Sainz had been driving so well until that point too...

26 May

Red flag! Sainz has hit the wall and stopped at the exit of the Swimming Pool. Now, who can possibly guess how that happened?

26 May

"I'm speechless with these guys," says Alonso after encountering more traffic... "Damn, the car won't go much quicker," reports Hamilton meanwhile. He's currently sixth, half a second off in the upgraded Merc.

26 May

Alonso has cut the gap to Sainz to just over a tenth with Verstappen not far behind. Meanwhile, Albon climbs into his Williams after having his front and rear suspension, rear wing and gearbox changed following his FP1 crash. Just over 20 mins to go.

26 May

A few corrections and a bit of traffic for Verstappen, who takes third as Perez takes fifth.

26 May

Only three personal bests on softs for Leclerc, who slots into third but is almost four tenths slower than Sainz.

26 May

Now Sainz goes P1 on softs, 0.217s quicker than Alonso.

26 May

More drivers moving to softs now as Alonso fails to beat his best lap. Ocon second with the Mercedes third and fourth.

26 May

Russell goes off track to pass Alonso at the chicane. "Are we allowed to overtake people off track or not?" the Aston Martin driver asks.

26 May

Three purple sectors put Alonso top by 0.526s. Stroll on the same tyre goes third, more than eight tenths off his team-mate.

26 May

Two by two at the front at this stage with both Red Bulls ahead of both Ferraris. Alonso is currently fifth but is just starting a lap on softs...

26 May

Now Sainz (hards) goes up to second, just 0.241s behind Verstappen on mediums. Hmm...

26 May

Norris is finally out for his first flying lap of the session. He goes... P19 as Verstappen extends his advantage over Alonso to three tenths.

26 May

Verstappen retook top spot from Hamilton a moment ago and now Alonso slots into P2. The gap? 0.015s. Game on?

26 May

Now Hamilton takes over top spot by 0.001s! Meanwhile, replays show Sainz encountering a slow-moving Leclerc at the Swimming Pool section. Communication is key, Ferrari...

26 May

Verstappen struggling? Yeah, right. He goes top with a 1:13.985.

26 May

Replays show Perez meeting two slow cars on entry to Massenet as McLaren mechanics work frantically on the suspension on Norris's car.

26 May

Times tumbling in these early stages, with Norris and Albon the only drivers not out on track.

26 May

Green light. Work continues on Alex Albon's car following his crash late in FP1 earlier, so it remains to be seen if he'll make it out in this session.

26 May

To recap, Carlos Sainz set the pace in FP1 earlier ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. The Red Bulls, you ask? Only fourth and sixth respectively, with Verstappen struggling more than Perez.

26 May

27 May

And the session will not be resumed. It's a Red Bull 1-2 as we head into qualifying...can anyone stop their stranglehold? Join us at 1600 local time to find out.

27 May

RED FLAG! Hamilton has hit the barrier at Mirabeau. A rare mistake for Lewis! He apologises to the team who now have some work to do to get his W14 car ready for qualifying.

27 May

Track is clear again with six minutes left in the session. The marshals did an excellent job getting that stricken Haas car out of the way quickly.

27 May

Oh, this is not good for K-Mag. He is urged to stop the car after reporting "no power" and we have a Virtual Safety Car in effect.

27 May

Brief yellow flags in sector one as Kevin Magnussen is forced to use the escape road at Saint Devote.

27 May

There was a huge sense of anticipation as Alonso wound himself up for another hot lap but that soon disappeared when he was five tenths down through the first sector. He's down in P13 but we're sure he will be up there when it matters most.

27 May

15 minutes left in FP3...

27 May

A front suspension change for Lance Stroll has sparked some improvement. The Canadian is up to P3 and just 0.166s off the pace.

27 May

George Russell has had a bit of a hefty whack at Rascasse but he looks like he has got away with it. Verstappen finds further improvement to open up a 0.073s advantage over Perez.

27 May

Another change at the top. Verstappen is three tenths ahead of Perez with track evolution clearly very high. Conditions improving with every passing second. Hamilton slots into P5, six tenths off the pace.

27 May

Normal order is restored as we now have a Red Bull one-two again at the top of the timesheet. Perez leading Verstappen by two tenths.

27 May

Well, hello there Fernando Alonso! He has just knocked Verstappen off top spot by 0.097s! Is he a genuine pole position contender today?

27 May

And the reigning World Champion is immediately on the pace and goes five tenths clear of his team-mate. A 1:13.794 on the soft tyres.

27 May

A real flurry of action as Norris, Stroll and Perez all trade P1 places between each other in the space of three minutes. Perez is back on top and opens up a three tenth gap to second-placed Stroll. Let's see what Max is capable of on his first run...

27 May

Lance Stroll goes quickest of anyone through the first sector on his way to finishing 0.078s off Perez's best. That's good enough for P3 at the moment.

27 May

The Ferrari boys have both thrown down early markers but neither are quick enough to dislodge Sergio Perez from P1. The Red Bull driver posted a 1:14.990 on the softs.

27 May

Looks like a hydraulic issue for Ocon. He's back in the garage now and this problem is going to eat into his precious practice time ahead of qualifying later on. Not ideal.

27 May

Some early drama. Esteban Ocon has come to a stop in the tunnel and reporting "no power". He looks like he has been able to sort it for now with the always useful technique of turning the car off and on again.

27 May

We have a green light! A gentle start to proceedings with Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso amongst those particularly keen to get their programmes underway.

27 May

Hello and welcome back to sunny Monte Carlo. It's qualifying day! But first, we have one final hour of practice coming up from 1230 local time. Join us then.
