Fans: Steyn back in Bok frame

Cape Town - Sport24 readers are hoping overseas-bound Morne Steyn is not completely lost to Springbok rugby, after a remarkable return to form for the Bulls in 2013.

Steyn, 28, on Monday decided to take up an offer with French giants Stade Francais and will join them until June 2016, but will see out his contract with the Bulls, which expires on October 31 this year.

Following the Bulls' first two weeks in Super Rugby, fans say they are seeing the same vintage Steyn from 2009 where he was instrumental in the Boks defeating the touring British & Irish Lions.

Steyn's star appeared to be on the wane in 2012 when his kicking radar went haywire. Steyn reached rock-bottom when he was booed by the Port Elizabeth faithful against England and then again as he missed five out of six kicks against New Zealand in Dunedin in a Test the Boks should have won.

However, Steyn's Lazarus act in the 2013 Super Rugby season has kicked his critics to the curb.

Steyn began with a bang when he gave the Stormers a tactical kicking masterclass, that had the defending SA Conference champions on the back foot and pinned in their own half for much of the game.

In Steyn's second game he scored the opening try against the Force, then showed nerves of steel to goal some crucial kicks late in the game to see his team home.

If Steyn continues to show this rich vein of form for the rest of the season, he could find himself back at No 1 in the pecking order for the Springbok flyhalf jersey when the international season begins.

Here's what Sport24 readers had to say about Steyn:

"At this stage, Elton Jantjies is useless...against the Chiefs, Johan Goosen was useless, Pat Lambie against the Stormers was very average; Morne Steyn against the Stormers? Man of the Match. Yes, the Boks still need Morne Steyn..."
- Johnny Johnson

"No question, we definitely need Morne for the next World Cup."
- Lean Sadie

"It's all about current form, Morné Steyn, and that applies to all players. You produce the magnificent form you did back in 2009 against the All Blacks in Durban when you score all of our 31 points in that win, then yeah, why not? You also won a Super 14 title that year!!! The Boks will then want you to put on the green and gold jersey again for us, but you have be in form and the best there is in your position." - Sean

"According to the stats...Morne Steyn is definitely the best...go check the stats." - JJ

"Prediction, he's going to Europe to play in conditions similar to they will be in 2015. Heyneke's long term plan to win us the Cup in 2015."
- Craven Luyt

"There's no-one better in SA than Steyn. It's so easy to sit there and repeat mindless water cooler drivel. But who are you talking about and please justify your selection. Because all I've seen is a wimpy kid called Lambie, oliebol can't kick Jantjies and limp-a-minute Goosen. Whereas Morne Steyn is made of titanium encrusted with diamonds and has been blessed with the most adept kicking boot since Naas Botha. If there was ever a more beautiful symphony of awesomeness, it was a Chinese knockoff that would break in three weeks. Whereas morne steyn is the real motherfreakin deal. What a man." - Myaliko Ralepelle

"Definitely the in-form SA flyhalf at the moment. Form is temporary, class is permanent." - Jeffrey Aucamp

"When Steyn's on song, the Bulls are on top. Same goes with the Boks."
- Johan Jacobs

"From hero to zero and back again, just like Bryan Habana last season, it just goes to show even the best players go through a bad patch in their career sometimes, but it shows great character to fight your way back to the top."
