Cape Town - Luvo Manyonga has leapt to victory at the Diamond League finals in Zurich, but not before he was pushed all the way by compatriot Rushwahl Samaai.

Manyonga led for much of the long jump event, taking the lead with his first leap of 8.32 metres.

Samaai trailed in second with his best jump coming with his second attempt when he landed an 8.30 metre effort.

With two rounds remaining, Samaai lept into the lead by matching Manyonga's best effort.

That spurred the Olympic silver medallist into action and he landed an 8.36 metre jump with his last attempt of the evening to snatch victory.

Earlier, Caster Semenya cruised to victory in the 800m event.

With a strong field assembled on the night, Semenya led for all of the race putting distance between herself and the chasing pack from the start.

She strode further away from her opposition down the final straight, winning by around eight metres and stopping the clock in a time of 1:55.27.

Semenya was followed home by Ajee Wilson of the United States who took second in a time of 1.57:86 and Natoya Goule of Jamaica who finished third in 1.58.49.

With her victory, Semenya has won her third consecutive Diamond League trophy and is now unbeaten in the 800m event for a period of three years.

She won $50 000 (over R700 000) for claiming the 800m Diamond League title.
