Wayde van Niekerk tests positive for Covid-19, international race comeback on hold

South Africa's Olympic champion, Wayde van Niekerk won't be making his scheduled return to international racing on Saturday after he tested positive for Covid-19 in the lead up to the Trieste Meet in Italy.

Van Niekerk, who has recovered from a long-term knee injury was lined-up for both the 400m and 100m races on Saturday. 

According to the Gazette dello Sport, Van Niekerk had spent the last 14 days in quarantine in Italy after arriving in the country on 19 July.

Van Niekerk's manager confirmed that his athlete had been tested on four occasions since his arrival in Italy with the last test coming out positive for Covid-19.

Another test has since been taken and Van Niekerk's camp are awaiting the results.
