It took a spot of personal, mountain bike-related misfortune for this writer to latch a little unknowingly onto live, large-screen coverage of this year’s Cape Epic ... the annual “Tour de France” equivalent (or so devotees suggest) of the MTB world.

A strictly amateur but keen, huffing-and-puffing and usually twice-a-week-warrior, I was innocently leaning down to lube the chain of my bike on Wednesday's day off - in anticipation of a regular Table Mountain ride - when I experienced one of my periodic, unmistakable spasms usually signalling the start of an irksome 48- or 72-hour back "episode".
