Daily sports briefs | Beckham and Rooney pick Messi over Ronaldo, Michael Jordan documentary on Netflix, tennis' 'Big 3' plan gets push-back - and more!

EX-STARS PICK MESSI OVER CR7

Former Manchester United and England legends, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney, both picked Lionel Messi as their best player ever over Cristiano Ronaldo. Beckham acknowledged that both were a level up from anyone, else but that Messi is without a doubt the best. “He [Messi] is alone in his class as a player, it is impossible that there is another like him. He, like Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not at his level, are both above the rest,” said Beckham. Rooney added this to the debate: "Ronaldo is ruthless in the box, a killer. But Messi will torture you before he kills you."

MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: It's a tough one to call but we have always believed Messi to have the edge over Ronaldo.

MORAL DILEMNA FOR NEWCASTLE FANS

While it is every fan's dream for their club to be taken over by wealthy Saudi owners, in Newcastle's case, it is not quite as straightforward. This is because the new owner, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, allegedly authorised the murder of a dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in 2018. The brutal murder was met with global contempt and represented the dark side of the Saudi regime.

MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Regardless of what we think, the deal is going through anyway and Newcastle manager Steve Bruce will apparently be backed with a £200m transfer "war chest". I highly doubt your average Newcastle fan will care too much if their beloved team wins the league with Ronaldo leading the line.

MJ'S "THE LAST DANCE" THE SPORTING EQUIVALENT OF "TIGER KING"

It could be down to opportunistic marketing during the global lockdown but US sports news sites are currently dominated by talk of the ESPN/Netflix documentary on Michael Jordan called "The Last Dance". The doc tracks the fortunes of the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls starring Jordan with film crews having an all access pass to the team's locker room.

MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Will tune in tonight as it drops on Netflix in SA today. If you are into behind-the-scenes sports docuseries then we also recommend checking out "Sunderland till I die" also on Netflix.

PGA TOUR PLANS TO USE A MILLION TESTING KITS

The PGA tour has reportedly pre-ordered over a million test kits and plans to test every player and his dog in order to get the season completed. The testing procedures will involve players, caddies and officials being sent testing kits to their homes, with a further check required if anyone has travelled to a tournament by aeroplane.

MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: At around $10 a pop, a million testing kits is chump change for the PGA tour and would be a minimum requirement for their ambitious plans to get the season going in June.

TENNIS' BIG THREE BAIL-OUT PLAN GETS SOME PUSH-BACK

Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer recently announced a plan to help lower ranked players get through these tough times by arranging a charitable scheme whereby the top 100 players would make a donation to those ranked 250-700. Djokovic has proposed that the top five contribute $30 000 each, going down to $5 000 for those ranked 50-100. Some are arguing that the very top players should contribute a lot more, while others are asking why has it taken a pandemic to help some of the lower-ranked players who struggle all the time? What about the guy who is ranked 249? Does he miss out?

MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: It is a noble idea but in practice may be difficult to implement. The top players should certainly contribute more as $30k is less than a racket abuse fine for them.
