PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 1ST ROUND TAKEAWAYS
Stay out of the rough! - The rough at Harding Park is deep and gnarly. The damp conditions also make it hard to muscle the ball out of there. The course is short so the smart play is to keep it on the short stuff.
Tiger's new putter works - Yesterday we mentioned Tiger was considering a change from his trusty Scotty Cameron Newport 2 that he won 14 of his 15 majors with. Well, he made the change and it worked as he logged his best strokes gained putting since January ... OK he hasn't played much since then but still. His new putter looks the same as his old one but is just a bit longer allowing him to practice more as it puts less strain on his back as he doesn't have to bend down as much.
How are our picks doing? - Colin Morikawa posted a modest 69 to be 4 off the pace while J-Rose pulled off a 66 despite not playing well to be one off the heat.
And the South Africans? - It wasn't a great day for SA. Of the 8 South Africans in the field, only Shaun Norris went under par (-1) with "Shrek" (Louis Oosthuizen) and Dylan Frittelli at evens and Erik van Rooyen further back at +1.
GARETH BALE OUT OF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SHOWDOWN
The ongoing chess match between Gareth Bale and Real Madrid took another twist this week when Bale was left out of Zinedine Zidane's 24-man squad for their crucial Champions League second-leg v Manchester City on Friday night. When questioned on the matter, Zidane said that Bale "did not want to play". It has emerged that Bale was not keen to travel to Manchester with no chance of featuring in the game as Zidane has not been a fan of his attitude of late.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: When you are being paid as much as Bale is, you need to show respect for your teammates and do as you are told. Bale has been poorly treated by Real Madrid at times but his protracted battle and lack of interest does not reflect well on him as a role model for young players. He seems to think it's all about the money and will look back on this time with regret as he is wasting his talent in the prime of his career.
5-SUB RULE DITCHED
Premier League clubs voted to abandon the controversial five-substitute rule implemented by the EPL post lockdown. The rule had been introduced to help teams cope with the summer weather and compact playing schedule.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: The rule was only meant to be temporary anyway and so it was bizarre that it was even on the table for next season which should see a return to regular scheduling. It was also unfairly favourable to the bigger clubs who have far more quality off the bench and therefore a major disadvantage for the poorer teams who had less depth in reserve.
