Cape Town - Cameron van der Burgh said the 50m breaststroke bronze medal he won at the FINA World Championship in Budapest on Wednesday is just as good as if it were gold.

The South African star finished in third place as Britain's Adam Peaty won gold (25.99) with Brazil's Joao Gomes Junior taking silver (26.52).

Van der Burgh touched the wall in a time of 26.60 - 0.61 seconds short of Peaty and 0.08 seconds behind Gomes for second.

The 50m breaststroke became Van der Burgh's sole event in Hungary after he pulled out of the 100m breaststroke earlier in the week.

Van der Burgh took to Instagram to thank everyone for their support writing, "Just as good as a GOLD to me! My 10th consecutive year medaling at World Champs in this event. A decade of incredible memories... Thank you everyone for being a part of it!"
