Cape Town - It's like Christmas in July!
Rugby, cricket, soccer, cycling, horseracing, tennis and much more ... die-hard sports fans would've circled Saturday July 6 in the calendar for some time now.
It promises to be a bumper sporting day, so stock the fridge, make sure the beers are on ice and make sure you stay glued to Sport24 for all the results and reaction!
Kicking things off at 09:35 will be the Super Rugby final between the nine-time champion Crusaders and the Jaguares in Christchurch. Both teams are deserved finalists and it should be a cracker - not to mention a mini-preview of the opening Rugby Championship clash between Argentina and the All Blacks in Buenos Aires a fortnight later.
Prediction: Crusaders by 9
TOUR DE FRANCE
Stage 1 of the 2019 Tour de France begins in Belgium. A gentle 194.5km leg loosener around the city of Brussels to get things started. The race is missing four-time champion Chris Froome and on paper at least appears to be a climber's dream.
Prediction: Stage 1 winner: Elia Viviani
Prediction: Yellow jersey winner: Geraint Thomas
CRICKET WORLD CUP
India play Sri Lanka at 11:30 SA time, but all eyes will be on the South Africa v Australia clash at 14:30. For some players - David Warner and Steve Smith in particular - it will be their first clash against the Proteas since the infamous 'Sandpaper-gate' at Newlands in March 2018.
The Proteas' woes at the World Cup have been well-documented and the match represents nothing more than the chance to end the tournament on a high. For Australia there's a lot more at stake. Victory would see them top the log and play New Zealand in the semi-finals, leaving India to clash with hosts England.
Prediction: Australia to beat South Africa
South Africa's greatest horseracing event, the R4.25 million Durban July over 2 200m, will take place at Greyville at 16:20. It's a stacked field, certainly the strongest in recent years. All the beautiful people will be in attendance and the champagne - and money - will flow.
Prediction: Hawwaam to win
Saturday will be Day 6 at Wimbledon with fan-favourites Roger Federer (v Lucas Pouille) and Rafael Nadal (v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga) both in action. It's been a topsy-turvy first few days at SW19 with a number of seeded players ousted in both the men's and women's draw.
Prediction: Men's winner: Novak Djokovic
Prediction: Women's winner: Ashleigh Barty
AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS
Bafana Bafana squeaked into the last 16 stage by the narrowest of margins. Their reward for doing so? A clash against tournament hosts Egypt. Thankfully for Stuart Baxter's men, they may be spared having to face Liverpool superstar Mo Salah due to illness. Will it help? Probably not...
Prediction: Egypt to beat Bafana Bafana
Still want more action this weekend?
Then don't miss the Women's Soccer World Cup final (USA v Netherlands) on Sunday (17:00), the German MotoGP (Sunday at 14:00) and golf from both the PGA and European Tours.
