Team SA finish Special Olympics with 59 medals

Cape Town - Team South Africa have ended their Special Olympics campaign with 59 medals after competing in the tournament in Abu Dhabi this past weekend.

According to 702.co.za, South Africa took home 36 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze.

The Special Olympics is a tournament for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, skills and friendship with other athletes and the community.

This year's tournament saw 7 000 athletes compete from 170 countries in 24 summer sports, which included cycling, golf, soccer and cricket.

The next Special Olympics is scheduled for 2021 in Sweden from February 2-13.
