Springbok midfield fulcrum Lukhanyo Am says he's surprised at some British and Irish Lions tour squad selections for the three-Test rugby bonanza beginning in July.

Lions head coach Warren Gatland named a 37-man squad last week to tour South Africa in the most anticipated rugby tour on the global sporting calendar.

The squad, captained by Alun Wyn Jones, included a flurry of in-form first-time Lions tourists such as Welsh winger Josh Adams, Irish centre Bundee Aki and 20-year-old rising Wales back Louis Rees-Zammit.
