When Ruan Pienaar looks back on the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour, one would expect him to have conflicting emotions.

Steadily entering the mature phase of his international career, the then 25-year-old was ready to build on a burgeoning reputation as a flyhalf at the highest level.

National coach Peter de Villiers had already backed him as his pivot on a highly successful end-of-year tour to Europe the previous year and Pienaar looked primed to take the position by the scruff of the neck.
