One of the few times in which the late Joost van der Westhuizen was outplayed was during the 1997 British and Irish Lions Series when up-and-coming England scrumhalf Matt Dawson showed his growing promise.

Welshman Mike Phillips came of age in the 2009 series, but Fourie du Preez, Enrico Januarie and Ruan Pienaar were a bridge too far for him.

Those were the scrumhalf battles for the previous tours, but the 2021 series comes with a different set of challenges.
