Salt in Lions' wounds: Rassie plays heavy hand in series-clinching Steyn entry

Bok ratings: Kolbe deadly, Nyakane and Steyn are the 'Bomb'!

Siya Kolisi’s men had to come from behind, as they did last week, but once again they were crucially well served by their increasingly hallowed “Bomb Squad” of substitutes, who were hugely influential in swinging this one around.

Chief writer Rob Houwing provides his Springbok ratings after their heart-stopping late clinching of the final Test and series against the Lions.

Magical Kolbe, evergreen Steyn: Desperate Boks scrap, claw way to brutal British Lions series triumph`

Morne Steyn, as he did in 2009, kicked the Springboks to a series victory over the British & Irish Lions on Saturday in a tense, brutal Test match at Cape Town Stadium.

The Boks, outplayed again in the first half as they were in the second Test, found something from somewhere when it mattered most, and they scrapped, fought and clawed their way to a 19-16 triumph that saw them take the series 2-1.

Two late penalties from Morne Steyn saw South Africa sneak a 19-16 win and seal a 2-1 series triumph over the British & Irish Lions.

Steyn had also kicked the winning penalty to win the 2009 series and was again the Boks' hero, displaying nerves of steel when it really mattered. He replaced Handre Pollard in the final quarter with the game on a knife edge.

The Boks scored a thrilling second half try through winger and man-of-the-match Cheslin Kolbe before Steyn's boot proved pivotal late on.

Kolbe's try was reminiscent of his score against England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final. He received a pass from fullback Willie le Roux on a Bok attack into the Lions half and beat two Lions players, Liam Williams and Luke Cowan-Dickie, to dot down.

The Lions had led 10-6 at half-time but struggled to get out of their own half in the second stanza.

The visitors scored a first half try through hooker Ken Owens but will rue not taking a few shots at goal.

Can you believe it. 12 years after he kicked a penalty to win a Lions series, Morne Steyn has done it again! The Boks are Castle Lager Lions Series champs!

We're just minutes away from kick-off.

The Lions have made no less than six changes to the side that got outplayed in Cape Town last weekend. Liam Williams, Josh Adams, Bundee Aki and Wyn Jones have all been included in the starting line-up, while Ali Price and Ken Owens have been promoted from the bench. Adam Beard, Sam Simmonds and Finn Russell are the new faces among the replacements, while the likes of Mako Vunipola, Conor Murray and Luke Cowan-Dickie have been demoted from starters to substitutes. Stuart Hogg, Anthony Watson and Chris Harris have dropped out of the 23 altogether.
0'
The Boks have been forced into making several changes to their starting line-up following injuries to key figures Faf de Klerk and Pieter-Steph du Toit. Du Toit's absence sees Lood de Jager promoted to the starting side at lock, with Franco Mostert moving into the back row. Taking Faf's place at scrumhalf is Cobus Reinach. Also coming into the match day 23 is veteran flyhalf Morne Steyn.

The Springboks showed their class last weekend to bounce back and force a series decider, but it's back to square one today.
0'
Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of the third Test between the Springboks and the British & Irish Lions at Cape Town Stadium.
1'
Dan Biggar gets the game under way!
2'
It's an early penalty to the Lions after Handre Pollard knocks on a up and under and Jasper Wiese plays the ball from an offside position. Bigger will kick for goal.
3'
Biggar's first attempt is just wide.
4'
Now it's a penalty to the Boks for a high shot on Jasper Wiese. Cagey start from both teams, and we've already had a few up and unders.
5'
SIlly error from the Boks as Bongi Mbonambi doesn't throw it in straight.
7'
Lions showing a willingness to keep the ball in hand but they struggle to gain any metres and eventually put it on the boot.
10'
Promising build-up from the Boks as they get over the gain line with a couple of nice carries and offloads. It ends in a penalty and Pollard will take his first shot at goal.
11'
Big moment as Dan Biggar leaves the field with an injury. Finn Russell has come on in his place.
12'
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 3-0. It's over from the Bok flyhalf.
13'
Boks penalised for not releasing in the tackle, and the Lions will kick for touch. A nice little run from Liam Williams in the build-up.
14'
High-fives from the Lions as they win a scrum penalty, and there's a shot coming up.
15'
PENALTY! LIONS! RUSSELL! 3-3. No mistake from the Scottish flyhalf.
17'
Very good passage of play from the Lions who earn a penalty for a high tackle after some great offloads and smart running. They decide to kick for the corner rather than take the points.
19'
TRY! LIONS! OWENS! 3-8. It's a textbook rolling maul from the line-out and hooker Ken Owens barges over the line!
20'
CONVERSION! LIONS! RUSSELL! 3-10. It's a perfect kick from Russell out wide and they're ahead by seven.
24'
Boks trying to get something going here. The Lions collapse an attempted maul and the Boks will kick for territory.
28'
It's another penalty to the Lions for not releasing. The Lions are putting a lot of passes together and are starting to find gaps in the Springbok defence. Russell kicks for touch and the Lions will come again.
29'
The Boks force a turnover as Curry is blown up for taking a player out in the maul.
30'
Mbonambi makes a mess of the line-out and the Lions have possession again. All the momentum with the visitors now.
32'
The Lions are on the attack in the Boks 22 after a dangerous little break from Maro Itojo but Damien de Allende wins a crucial turnover penalty.
35'
That's better from the Boks at scrum time and they earn the penalty as the Lions buckle. Pollard will kick for goal.
36'
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 6-10. The Boks bring it back to within four.
37'
Boks penalised straight from the kick-off and the Lions are going for another maul try.
38'
It's a steal from Etzebeth but the referee has seen a knock on and the Lions have a scrum close to the line.
39'
It's another crucial steal from the Boks right on their own line, on the stroke of half-time - Siya Kolisi this time.
40'
And that's HALF-TIME. 6-10. The referee thought he spotted some foul play from the Boks but the TMO footage shows nothing and he blows his whistle. Not a great half from the Boks, who were thoroughly outplayed in most areas and had very little possession to work with. It will need a massive effort from the home side in the second 40. The Lions will feel they should be further ahead, however, as they had several opportunities to score that came to nothing.
41'
Handre Pollard gets the second half under way! There's 40 minutes left in this Castle Lager Lions Series.
42'
The Lions spill an early up and under and the Boks have a scrum in Lions territory.
43'

45'
The Boks went through multiple phases in the Lions territory but the tourists' defence holds up.
46'
It's a penalty to the Boks right in front as the Lions fail to roll away and this time Pollard will look to reduce the deficit.
47'
Pollard's penalty kick hits the upright!
49'
The Lions knock the ball on from their own line-out and the Boks have a scrum. The visitors pinned back in their own territory at the moment but it's not costing them any points.
52'
Kwagga Smith has replaced Lood de Jager, with Mostert moving back to lock.
52'
The Lions win a penalty for holding on but the TMO spots a high tackle on Cheslin Kolbe and it's a penalty to the Boks.
54'
Pollard has missed his second kick of the night as the penalty sails wide.
55'
Malcolm Marx, Vincent Koch and Marco van Staden have all come on the field.
57'
TRY! SOUTH AFRICA! KOLBE! 11-10. It's a beautiful solo effort from Cheslin Kolbe. Lukhanyo Am wins back an up and under and passes to Willie le Roux. He spots the space on the outside and frees up Kolbe, who beats several defenders before dotting down!
58'
CONVERSION! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 13-10. Pollard nails a tough conversion from out wide!
59'
Ali Price knocks on a Kolbe grubber kick and the Boks have another scrum in opposition territory.
60'
The Lions win the scrum penalty. Kitshoff doesn't look happy with that one.
61'
Trevor Nyakane comes on to the field as Kitshoff departs.
62'
Jasper Wiese penalised off the ball and the Lions will kick for goal to level the scores.
63'
PENALTY! LIONS! RUSSELL! 13-13. It's all square again.
64'

69'
Now the Lions have a penalty in the Boks' 22 for the Boks not rolling away. Russell kicks for the corner!
70'
The Lions are held up over the line and they have a five-metre scrum! Massive scrum coming up here.
72'
It's a massive penalty to the Boks on their own line as Kyle Sinckler's knees hit the ground! Steyn kicks a relieving kick.
74'
The Lions have another penalty as the Boks lose possession in a silly fashion with Jantjies not clearing the ball from behind the ruck. The Lions will kick to level the scores.
75'
PENALTY! LIONS! RUSSELL! 16-16. It's over!
78'
The Boks have a penalty at ruck time and Steyn will have a chance to retake the lead!
79'
