The Stormers have seemingly won a battle with the Bulls for Springbok utility back Damian Willemse's signature.

The 22-year-old playmaker has been a longstanding target for the Bulls, who apparently value his utility value with a European future in mind and could be considered a long-term successor to veteran Gio Aplon at fullback.

Jake White, the franchise's director of rugby, again raised the possibility of Willemse packing his bags for Pretoria earlier this week.

"It's no secret we're looking at Damian. He's played 10, 12 and 15 at Super Rugby level and for the Springboks," White said.

However, according to a report on the SA Rugbymag website, Willemse will be among the frontline players signing contract extensions with Western Province Rugby.

The report added that Springbok front-rankers Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe would also commit their futures to the Cape franchise until the 2023 Rugby World Cup, but there was uncertainty over hooker Bongi Mbonambi.

The World Cup-winning No 2 was believed to be on the radar of both the Bulls and Sharks, as well as a top overseas club.
