  • Cheetahs fullback Clayton Blommetjies said he's looking to be his own man when he joins the Stormers next season.
  • He'll be replacing Warrick Gelant, who has excelled for the Stormers despite a stop-start season due to injuries.
  • Blommetjies said the Currie Cup is still there to be won by the Cheetahs despite the Bulls being the best side.

Departing Cheetahs fullback Clayton Blommetjies hopes to leave his own marker at Western Province and the Stormers as the Cape franchise prepares for life without Warrick Gelant.

Gelant, despite injuries here and there, has been priceless for the Stormers this season in the United Rugby Championship.

Blommetjies may not have Gelant's game management and passing skills that sets him out from the rest, but the 31-year-old from Paarl is confident of being his own man in what's been a prized position for the Stormers.

Blommetjies confirmed that he signed a two-year deal with the Stormers.

"For me, it's not to be like Warrick. He's his own guy and I'm my own guy. We're two totally different players," Blommetjies said.

"Warrick sometimes likes to kick the ball where I would prefer to run the ball, so we're different players.

"If you're a fullback, you'd really want to play behind the Stormers pack with those Springboks there.

"You can have fun on the field and it's tries for days.

Blommetjies, who was chirpy throughout the Carling Champions Match launch for the game against Italy A that'll take place on 2 July at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, was a tinge sad on leaving the Cheetahs.

"I've won two Currie Cups with them, so it's now time for me to move on. It's something new and different for me,"

"I'm really looking forward to the move to Cape Town."

Leaving the Cheetahs opens the door for Blommetjies to participate in the United Rugby Championship.

It's a tournament Blommetjies took part in when it was still known as the Pro14, but the tourney's expansion saw the Cheetahs being elbowed out.

Blommetjies chose to look at the positives of how the Cheetahs' staff will find a way to keep being competitive while they focus on keeping up with the Bulls in the Currie Cup.

By beating the Lions 35-26 at Ellis Park on Friday, the Cheetahs went to the top of the log with 36 points to the Bulls' 32, with the latter facing the Griquas on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.

"Those factors, we can't control and that's for the bigger staff at the union to work on," Blommetjies said.

"As players, our priority is the Currie Cup and we want to deliver on the field. We just need to make sure we look after what we need to do.

"You'll start to see a three-year pattern emerging from 2016 to 2019 until now where we've done well in the Currie Cup."
