The Bulls' bulging cupboard of accomplished younger locks has convinced Jake White, the franchise's director of rugby, to part ways with Juandre Kruger.
A "mutual settlement agreement" had been reached, the franchise confirmed in a statement on Friday.
Despite a major clean-out during the hard lockdown period, White decided to initially keep the 35-year-old former Springbok lock on the books as an experienced presence.
But the emergence of Ruan Nortje and promising form shown by others such as Jason Jenkins, Walt Steenkamp and Sintu Manjezi has convinced the hierarchy that depth in the position is sufficient.
The Bulls also have Jan Uys in the wider playing squad, though he hasn't made an appearance yet.
"Juandre has always been the utmost professional. He has been exemplary as a player in terms of his work ethic, dedication and passion to his craft. We wish him all the best with his future endeavours," said Bulls CEO, Edgar Rathbone.
Kruger, who re-joined the Bulls along with fellow veteran Morne Steyn at the end of last year, also expressed his gratitude.
"I will always cherish my time spent in a Bulls jersey, and would like to wish the players, staff and management at Loftus everything of the best going forward. I’d also like to say a massive thank you to all those that have helped shape me as a player and as a person."
In all, he appeared 91 times for the Bulls and Blue Bulls.
