Superlative individual performances were fairly hard to come by as the Currie Cup sprang into action over the weekend.

But several players across the three matches showed high levels of industry or took limited chances well ... while stand-in Bulls flyhalf Chris Smith came to the fore with an exquisite, game-turning sense of timing in the big, fiercely-contested south-north derby.
