For the more casual Bulls supporter, the signing of Jacques van Rooyen is a homecoming steeped in romanticism.

The previously discarded stalwart of the Pretoria club rugby scene, who had to cross the Jukskei river to join the Lions and was seemingly forever lost to the union, is now part and parcel of Jake White's new era at Loftus.

It's one of the increasingly fewer instances of a South African player persevering with amateur rugby to belatedly realise the dream of becoming a professional.
