Sport24 asked: When do you begin your American adventure?
Tera Mtembu: I have been training on my own since November and am still awaiting my American visa. Hopefully it gets approved sometime this month and I can begin my three-year contract with the New England Free Jacks in Boston. MLR is a relatively new competition, which has only been going for four years, and rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in America. I wanted to have the opportunity to get in while it’s still growing. I want to be part of that growth and add value where I can. Many players will head to Europe or Japan because that is where the money is at but I wanted to do something different. Most of the players have started training and are there ahead of the upcoming MLR season. It will definitely help having fellow South Africans (there are three other South Africans at the franchise) but I’m also looking forward to learning from other cultures and how they think and do things. Everything has been sorted for me stateside, so it’s just about me getting on a plane and thereafter hitting the ground running.
