The once unlikely figures of Jacques Vermeulen and Jannes Kirsten stand tantalisingly on the cusp now of becoming South Africa's most decorated players - in silverware terms - of this highly unorthodox, coronavirus-blighted rugby calendar year.

That would be even greater a likelihood, of course, if the Springboks opt not to defend their Rugby Championship crown before year's end ... or take it on with a significantly experimental-themed, naturally more vulnerable squad.

A dreamy "double" beckons the pair at their faraway home base of Sandy Park in Exeter, England: knowledge that their Chiefs outfit are safely installed in the high-profile final of the European Champions Cup (17 October) and then, a week later on 24 October, could well be present in the English Premiership showpiece, too.
