Hello and welcome to our live coverage of this Super Rugby showdown between the Rebels and the Waratahs at AAMI Park. It hasn't been an ideal start to the season for either side and they will each be looking to get back on their feet.
That late Rebels change was forced by them exceeding the prescribed foreign player quota. In any case, the game has kicked off with referee Damon Murphy blowing his whistle and the Rebels getting us underway.
The Waratahs win the early penalty following a spell in defence as the Rebels are pinged for joining the ruck incorrectly.
Penalty against Bell at the scrum for collapsing. The Rebels might have a shot at posts here.
PENALTY, REBELS, TO'OMUA! 3-0: A good kick from To'omua as he gives the Rebels a deserved lead.
Ross Haylett-Petty knocks on from the kick-off and the Waratahs have a scrum inside opposition territory.
Scrum penalty for the Waratahs this time, caused by a change in bind. The Tahs set up the attacking lineout.
The Waratahs get the penalty advantage and take the ball through the phases. Eventually, there's a knock-on and they get the penalty for offside. There's a bit of argy bargy between the two teams, but nothing serious.
PENALTY, WARATAHS, HARRISON! 3-3: All square again.
TRY, REBELS, KOROIBETE! 8-3: A mistake at the lineout from the Waratahs sees the Rebels pounce on the ball. They work it out left to Koroibete, who dives over to restore the lead!
To'omua fails to convert from out left, so the score remains 8-3.
A lovely chip from Harrison goes into touch with one bounce and pins the Rebels back inside their 22.
The two teams exchange kicks before Koroibete runs into a tackle.
Clever kick from To'omua as he pins the Waratahs back. They take the ball back over their try line and it's a 5m scrum for the Rebels.
Have the Rebels just got the ball down in the corner? Damon Murphy goes upstairs with an on-field decision of no try.
No try — Louwrens lost control. We go back for a Rebels penalty and it's another 5m scrum. They go for the cross-field kick to Koroibete, but he fails to control the ball.
As we approach the half-hour mark, the Rebels have been the better team so far. They would have loved a bit of breathing space, though, and perhaps squandered an opportunity to get that with that recent attacking passage of play.
An opportunity for the Waratahs on attack goes a-begging. Hooper is penalised for not releasing the ball.
Rangi makes way to a round of applause as Misa comes on to replace him. Let's hope the Rebels starting hooker is okay.
Danger for the Waratahs as Beale spills the ball beyond his own try-line, but they survive the scare for the moment. It's a 5m scrum though. Great tackle from Meakes to take the ball out of Beale's hands.
NO TRY! Controversial call there and the home crowd doesn''t like it. We go back for a Rebels penalty for offside.
It looks like the Rebels have a try via Meakes! We're just going upstairs to look for obstruction.
KICK-OFF! The Waratahs get the second half underway with Wells receiving the kick.
HALF-TIME: REBELS 8-3 WARATAHS. The Rebels go into the break leading 8-3. It could easily have been more but for missed opportunities and misfortune. Stay tuned for the second half.
Off a penalty, Harrison sets up a lineout for the Waratahs just outside the Rebels 22.
The ball is lost forward by the Rebels from the lineout and the Waratahs now have a scrum on the 22.
TRY, WARATAHS, JOHNSON-HOLMES! 8-8: The Waratahs build up patiently before the tighthead prop finally barges over!
CONVERSION, WARATAHS, HARRISON! 8-10: All of a sudden, the Waratahs lead!
Immediately, the Rebels win a penalty for offside. They're going for posts, looking to regain the lead.
PENALTY, REBELS, TO'OMUA! 11-10: The penalty, given away by Simmons, is popped straight down the middle from To'omua from just outside the 22.
Gordon looks to pop through a gap in the defence, but he loses the ball forward as it is offloaded to him.
The Waratahs look to run the ball out of their own territory, but Dempsey is penalised for not releasing the ball.
Great tackle from Simmons on To'omua, as he forces the knock-on and relieves the pressure on the Waratahs.
The pressure mounts on the Rebels as the Waratahs take the ball through 11 phases. At long last, the Rebels win a penalty.
Dempsey is penalised for playing the jumper in the air at the lineout, so the Rebels have another penalty and they boot the ball into Tahs terrritory.
Louwrens passes to Koroibete on the short side, but he spills the ball into touch! He had only Maddocks in front of him and that could so easily have been a try.
An overthrow at the lineout gives possession back to the Rebels, but they lose it swiftly and give away the scrum.
PENALTY, REBELS, TO'OMUA! 14-10: The Rebels win a penalty right under the posts and To'omua pops it over!
Great work from Philip at the lineout to steal the ball against the throw. The Rebels are back on the attack.
TRY, REBELS, KELLAWAY! 19-10: You can't say they don't deserve it! After a patient build-up, To'omua gives the ball to Dane Haylett-Petty, who feeds Kellaway out wide. He dives over in the corner against his old side!
To'omua played an integral role in creating that try, but he fails to convert it.
To'omua pins the Waratahs back once again with a brilliant kick, which trickles into touch.
Beale is tackled in the in-goal area, conceding yet another 5m scrum.
TRY, REBELS, KELLAWAY! 24-10: The ball is worked out wide to Kellaway and he dives over in the corner again! Game, set, match!
FULL-TIME: REBELS 24-10 WARATAHS. To'omua fails to land the final conversion, but that does not detract from a fine performance from him. The Rebels lost their half-time lead early in the second period, but fought back to claim a thoroughly deserved victory.
