Tuesday's confirmation that the Cheetahs are no longer part of South African rugby's PRO Rugby plans naturally drew the ire of many supporters and rueful shrugs from neutral observers.

But, from the wheeler dealers among us, there were casual suggestions that SA Rugby should've again explored the possibility of combining franchises.

After all, five had to become four.
