Steyn attended Grey College in Bloemfontein,  before joining the Sharks straight after school in 2006.

In 2009 Steyn moved to France where he played for Racing Metro. After returning to the Sharks in 2012, he the had a stint in Japan before returning to France to play for Montpellier in 2016.

A two-time World Cup winner, Steyn played his first of 67 matches for the Springboks at the  age of 19.

“Further to the signing of Frans Steyn, the majority of the players will remain with the  Cheetahs for the following season,” added Verster.
