It's hard to dispute: Gary Gold has to rank among the most worldly South African figures in professional rugby directorship and coaching.

The 53-year-old Capetonian has worked, across those capacities and to a varying extent, on four continents: his home one, Europe, Asia and North America.

Apart from being an assistant coach with the Springboks during a period when they won a British and Irish Lions series and a Tri-Nations title in quick succession in 2009, his CV includes high-level employment with all of London Irish, Western Province/Stormers, Newcastle Falcons, Bath, Kobelco Steelers, the Sharks and currently as head coach of the United States national team.
