2019 World Rugby Player of the Year Pieter-Steph du Toit is expected to be included in the Stormers matchday squad for Saturday's Rainbow Cup clash against the Sharks at Cape Town Stadium.

It has been more than a year since Du Toit last played competitive rugby.

On February 28, 2020 against the Blues in Super Rugby Du Toit suffered a serious leg injury that developed into acute compartment syndrome that almost resulted in an amputation.

Du Toit's rehabilitation has been long and was made even more challenging by the coronavirus pandemic, but according to Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwani, the Springbok World Cup hero is good to go once more.

"He is fit. He's been training really well," said Hlungwani.

"He hasn't played in a really long time, so he'd love to play and to get going.

"Obviously, he has come back from a really bad injury, but you know how he is.

"He has a big engine, he is a hard worker and he's been really good around the players. Everyone is just happy to have him back and he's just ready to go."

Hlungwani confirmed that there were no other new injury concerns that would impact on selection and Friday's team announcement.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 14:00.
