There are other options to consider, but Sharks loosehead prop Retshegofaditswe "Ox" Nche is edging ever closer toward a Springbok match-day role in the British and Irish Lions series.

It is unlikely that Stormers captain and consistent No 1 powerhouse Steven Kitshoff will be beaten to starting duty for the Boks now that the great, long-time first choice Tendai Mtawarira has hung up his boots, but the retirement of the "Beast" does mean a vacancy for another loosehead - most likely as a member of the famed Bomb Squad "supersubs" who played no small part in the RWC 2019 success.

Already renowned for his open-play prominence, Nche again demonstrated in the Rainbow Cup at the weekend, as the Sharks saw off the Lions 34-26, that his all-important scrummaging is coming on in leaps and bounds; he could be a pleasing impact factor for the national side this year.
