Veteran Springbok Ruan Pienaar is back for the Cheetahs after being named on the bench for Saturday's preparation series clash against the Stormers in Cape Town.

Pienaar had been sidelined with a knee injury sustained early in last year's Super Rugby Unlocked event.

The 36-year-old, who played 88 Tests for the Springboks, joined the Cheetahs from French outfit Montpellier in 2019. He played mainly at scrumhalf and was instrumental in their Currie Cup triumph that year.

He can also be utilised at flyhalf and is therefore a useful attribute on the bench.

Elsewhere, new recruits Schalk Ferreira (prop) and Rynier Bernardo (lock) are included in the starting XV, while lock Carl Wegner will continue to captain the Cheetahs.

Saturday's match at Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 17:15.
