Call it the bravado-buster: World Cup holders South Africa crashed to earth with a bump, in a dramatic 28-point swing from one week to the next, at the hands of fired-up New Zealand on Saturday.

Ellis Park, supposedly the Springboks' hostile fortress, was left stunned as the All Blacks deservedly engineered a 35-23 Rugby Championship triumph from the supposed ashes of their 26-10 whipping on the Lowveld.

There was a sobering lesson from this experience - the Boks are so much more vulnerable when their famed "systems" aren't working clinically and a certain sense of flat-footedness takes hold.
