Given the backdrop, this perhaps deserves to go down as one of the hall-of-fame Springbok triumphs over their staunchest foes of all.

South Africa's Captain Fantastic, Siya Kolisi, enormously to the fore until his game-ending second-half head knock, the Boks dug demonically deep at the Gold Coast to eke out a heart-stopping, last-gasp 31-29 outcome in their favour against the All Blacks in the swansong 2021 Rugby Championship fixture on Saturday.

Never lacking in pure commitment and valour, signs had nevertheless looked ominous for a fourth consecutive tournament defeat for the World Cup champions when their first-half error count - undoing much of their otherwise constructive work - saw them slip to an 11-20 deficit not long before the break.
