The Springboks, in a cloud of dust, have jolted to a rather sudden crossroads.

All sorts of renewed debate will now, inevitably, be triggered about their playing philosophy as the 2019 World Cup champions -- and still so recent British and Irish Lions conquerors – stumbled to a second successive, and very clear-cut defeat (30-17) to an Australian side widely lampooned as “Wobblies” ahead of the latest edition of the Rugby Championship.

With only a formidable double round of matches against New Zealand ahead from here, South Africa look ominously set to end in the bottom half of the four-nation table, behind both of their fiercest southern-hemisphere rivals.
