It would have been a tired, gutted Springbok dressing room in steamy Townsville afterwards … even as the World Cup holders had just regained bag-loads of respect.

Pivotal aspects of their much-discussed, “suck ‘em dry” game-plan worked a treat in the landmark 100th Test against the All Blacks on Saturday: they had their foes rattled often enough -- and were leading 17-16 as late as the 77th minute, as if to drive home that very point.

But the fact remains that wily New Zealand, courtesy of a nerveless late penalty from the flawless boot of Jordie Barrett, still nicked this Rugby Championship clash 19-17 to put the 2021 tournament honours beyond doubt with a round to spare and inflict a painful third successive Test reverse on South Africa.
