Well, that was a stinger: it’s taken just one off-the-boil day to dramatically revise any positive thoughts about the Springboks emulating 2009 predecessors and adding the Rugby Championship (then Tri-Nations) crown soon afterwards to success over the British and Irish Lions.

The Boks' clumsy 28-26 reverse to the Wallabies at the Gold Coast on Sunday only sweetened infinitely further a productive day for the All Blacks, who duly earned another “full house” in their thrashing of Argentina earlier on the double-header bill.

After narrowly fancying them for the Championship honours ahead of the tournament, I give these Boks only a 20-25 percent prospect - at best? - from here, the midway point, of ascending to the silverware.
