Their unexpected - at least in the eyes of plentiful South Africans - stumble against the Wallabies at the Gold Coast on Sunday brings into sharp renewed focus the Springboks’ lousy modern record in Australia.

Overall, and despite the costly 28-26 defeat in the 2021 Rugby Championship, the Boks still rule the bilateral roost comfortably enough: 48 wins to 38, with three draws, from the 89 tussles (only two on neutral ground) since 1933.

As with so many significant rugby rivalries, there is a relatively clear pattern of one country having a considerably better record in the home clashes than the away ones.
