REPORT: Springboks scrap, kick and claw their way to agonising defeat

Heartbreak at the death for the Springboks, who will perhaps wonder how they let that one slip.

Jordie Barrett's boot proved the difference as he showed immense composure to slot the late penalty from close to the touchline.

The Springboks were vastly improved from the past two weeks though. Their scrums and lineouts were superior but they must have a look at their excessive kicking at critical moments.

Beauden Barrett gets this 100th Test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks under way!
TRY! NEW ZEALAND! JORDAN! 5-0. The ABs take two quick line-outs to keep the ball in hand. It's two missed tackles from the Boks that allows Codie Taylor to break the line before he offloads to Will Jordan for the try in the corner. Danger signs for South Africa.
CONVERSION! NEW ZEALAND! BARRETT! 7-0. The fullback nails a tough conversion.
TRY! SOUTH AFRICA! NKOSI! 7-5. Faf de Klerk sends an up-and-under into the ABs 22 and George Bridge has plenty of time but makes a hash of a simple take. The ball bounces free and Sbu Nkosi is quickest to the ball to score!
Pollard can't nail the conversion.
Abs on the attack but the Boks earn a penalty at the breakdown. Duane Vermeulen quickest to the ball.
Pollard launches an up-and-under after the Boks get a free kick at the line-out and Brodie Retallick is penalised for obstruction. Pollard will take a shot at goal.
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 7-8. The flyhalf finds the target and the Boks take the lead.
It's another penalty to the Boks as Retallick comes in from the side. Pollard will take another shot but it's a tough one.
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 7-11. The Boks extend their lead.
Pollard penalised at ruck time and the ABs will kick for touch in ths Boks' 22. Harsh penalty though.
Boks penalised for coming in from the side and Barrett kicks for the corner.
It's a brilliant counter ruck from the Boks who turn the ball over and escape their line.
Lengthy break in play here as Frans Malherbe requires some attention.
The ABs are penalised at the scrum as it collapses.
The Boks lose their first line-out as the ABs contest strongly.
A let-off for the Springboks as the ABs collect an up and under and break free but a handling error sees the men in green and gold escape.
Boks penalised for sacking the line-out too early and the ABs kick for touch deep in Bok territory.
Again, the ABs are a bit sloppy in possession and the ball is turned over.
The Boks on the attack but again they kick the ball away and the ABs escape. Pollard went for the touch finder in behind but didn't get the bounce and it rolled dead.
Another great line-break from the All Blacks which ends in a penalty for the men in black. Looks they will go for the points.
PENALTY! NEW ZEALAND! BARRETT! 10-11. Easy one for Jordie Barrett.
Mistake from the kick-off from Pollard and the ABs have a scrum on the half-way line.
Another penalty against the Boks as De Klerk strays offside. Error rate starting to creep up for the world champs. The ABs opt to kick for touch rather than take the points.
Sbu Nkosi in trouble here for a deliberate knock down.
That's a yellow card to Nkosi. The Boks' discipline letting them down again tonight. The ABs will take the points on offer here to retake the lead.
PENALTY! NEW ZEALAND! BARRETT! 13-11. It's over from the fullback.
Another penalty against the Boks as Kwagga Smith doesn't release in the tackle.
The Boks get the steal at the line-out and De Klerk makes the clearance.
It's a forward pass from the ABs and that's half-time. A good opening 20 minutes from the Boks but then the discipline and errors returned in full force. They will need to cut down on the mistakes in the second half.
Handre Pollard gets the second half under way!
It's a penalty to the ABs as the Boks seal it off at the ruck.
Another penalty to the ABs, who kick for the corner. Malcolm Marx and Steven Kitshoff have come onto the field.
The ABs knock on with the tryline beckoning. Pollard clears but the ABs still on the attack. It's another penalty against the Boks and the ABs kick for the corner again. Sbu Nkosi is back on the field and the Boks are back to 15 men.
The ABs maul is forced out in the corner and again the Boks live to fight another day.
A rare penalty against the ABs for straying offside and the Boks will look to escape their own half for the first time this half.
It's a high tackle from Kwagga Smith and the ABs can escape. The ABs were also playing under a scrum advantage. Again the Boks kicked the ball away while on the attack inside ABs territory, which led to the knock on from Etzebeth.
Now the ABs knock on again and the Boks have the scrum.
Faf de Klerk makes a hash of a pass as another Bok attack comes to naught.
It's a scrum penalty to the ABs, who kick for touch inside Bok territory.
Eben Etzebeth is being replaced by Franco Mostert. The Boks have a scrum near the halfway line.
The Boks have the penalty after some rare enterprising play with the ball in hand. Pollard will kick for goal.
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 13-14. It's over and the Boks are back in front.
ABs on the attack putting the passes together and the Boks stray offside. Barrett will kick to retake the lead.
PENALTY! NEW ZEALAND! BARRETT! 16-14. No mistake from the fullback.
Vermeulen penalised for taking out the player in the air but he looked to be going for the ball. Nonetheless, that's the seventh penalty against the Boks in this half alone. Vincent Koch and Marco van Staden have come onto the field for Malherbe and Smith.
It's a scrum penalty to the Boks and Pollard nails a good touch finder.
The ABs are penalised for collapsing the maul and Pollard will kick to retake the lead.
PENALTY! SOUTH AFRICA! POLLARD! 16-17. Pollard's kick is good and once again the Boks edge ahead.
Damian McKenzie penalised straight from the restart for tackling the player in the air.
Damian de Allende has been replaced by Frans Steyn.
It's another penalty against the Boks, but the ABs can't take advantage as they knock on again. They've been uncharacteristically sloppy in this game, but the Boks' defence will have had something to do with that.
The Boks get the penalty at scrum time. The all-new front row doing the business.
The Boks on the attack just outside the ABs 22 but they eventually kick it away and the ABs can hack it into Bok territory. You feel that was a real chance for the Boks to go on the attack and keep the ball in hand.
End to end stuff as both teams get a chance to run with the ball, but it ends with advantage to the ABs as Willie le Roux is forced to hack it into touch. The ABs will have the line-out on the 22m line. Herschel Jantjies on for Faf de Klerk.

The All Blacks get the penalty as the Boks are pinged for holding on. Barrett will kick to retake the lead. Great steal there from the ABs.

The Boks get one last chance to try and force something but it ends with a knock on and that's the match.
