Deflated Blitzboks go down to USA in Bronze final

The Springbok Sevens side's Cape Town Sevens campaign ended on a low note when they lost the Bronze final 22-14 to the USA on Sunday evening.  

The Americans thoroughly deserved their win as they ran in four tries against a somewhat deflated Blitzboks outfit.

The hosts had earlier lost 10-7 in extra-time to Samoa in the semi-finals and they struggled to pick themselves up for the third-place encounter.  

The South Africans scored tries through skipper Siviwe Soyizwapi and Dalvon Blood but it wasn't enough against a motivated USA outfit.

Blitzboks star JC Pretorius was left heartbroken after South Africa lost to Samoa in their Cup semi-final on Sunday.

"This will really hurt, but that's Sevens you only have five minutes to be sad. Especially [for] me as this will be my last Sevens tournament, I'm going back to the Lions."

Extra-time agony for Blitzboks as they lose Cup semi-final to Samoa

The Blitzboks suffered an agonising 10-7 Cup semi-final defeat to Samoa at the Cape Town Sevens on Sunday.  

Samoa's Faafoi Falaniko kicked a composed drop goal in extra-time after the visitors won a penalty from a kick-off.  

The game went into extra-time after the scores were level at 7-7 after full-time.  

Samoa had led 7-0 at half-time through a try from Vaovasa Afa Sua. The second half was all South Africa but the Blitzboks struggled to finish promising opportunities.  

Ryan Oosthuizen finally went over after relentless pressure from the hosts, with Ricardo Duartee slotting an easy conversion to level matters.  

There was one final chance in regulation time but a knock on from the Blitzboks forced the game into extra-time.  

The golden rule was in play where the first team to score points would win.

Samoa cashed in when they won a penalty from the kick-off, before Falaniko stepped up to drop kick the penalty.  

Samoa will now face New Zealand in the Cup final at 19:56, while South Africa will face USA in the Bronze final at 18:59.

The SA women next tackle Japan in the 11th-place playoff at 12:08.

Blitzboks fend off plucky Great Britain to reach Cup semi-finals

The Springbok Sevens side booked their spot in the Cape Town Sevens Cup semi-finals after dismissing a plucky Great Britain on Saturday night.  

The Blitzboks won the quarter-final contest 21-14, after the scores were level at 7-7 at half-time.  

The South Africans appeared in control for large parts, but a gallant Great Britain kept fighting back.  

South Africa scored three tries through Ryan Oosthuizen, Ricardo Duarttee and Dalvon Blood.  

Blood's score came late in the contest and sealed the deal when the scores were level at 14-14.  

The Blitzboks will tackle Samoa in the Cup semi-finals at 15:46 on Sunday. The other semi-final will be between New Zealand and USA (15:24).
