The Springboks' momentous, record-equalling third World Cup title last year highlighted a peculiar thing about the national team.

There is arguably no team in international rugby that is more attuned to the inherent nature of the showpiece tournament, a space that rewards pragmatic rugby low in risk.

But, despite the pedigree of emulating the All Blacks in terms of lifting the hallowed Webb Ellis trophy, South Africa has a long-documented history of struggling to be the best team in the world between tournaments.
